The Khmer Empire originated in northern (modern day) Cambodia, and expanded following the Mekong river. By the 800’s, Khmer had become a powerful Empire. It depended on the production of rice for it’s wealth. Due to their irrigation systems, the people of Khmer were able to produce 3-4 crops of rice a year as opposed to only one crop. This gave the people enough food to eat, sell, and trade.
Women in the Khmer
palace held higher statuses then
women from other civilizations.
Women Played a tremendous role
in the Empire, because only females
were allowed in the palace. Noble
women were educated and sometimes
served as royal judges. Poor
women were allowed own market
stalls to sell products like ivory. The Angkor Wat

The Angkor Wat was a grand monument built in Angkor, the capitol of Khmer, for Vishu, a Hindu god. The monument was also used as an obsevatory.
Another great monument built by the Khmer Empire was the Buddhist temple in Borobudur. Like the Angkor Wat, it’s design is very complex. It’s structure and beauty truly reflect Indian Influence.
The island of Java was ruled by the Sailendrea Dynasty. The Empire of Shivijaya then grew powerful and took over Sailendrea, and the dynasty fell. The new empire’s capital became Palembang, it was a rich environment and the center of Buddhist teachings. Chinese monks went there to study Buddhism, it was much more convenient then having to travel to India. Also the shivijaya had access to and controlled all the waterways, including the strait of Malacca. The Empire took advantage of that, and taxed all of the trade products on their water routes. The empire prospered this way.
