  • Good evening!
  • I’ll be really honest with you Have you seen those American movies with an Alcoholic Anonymous scene? They sit in a circle and they start talking like this: Hi. My name is Isman. I have a confession to make. I am in a wrong job, I need help! :P
  • Today’s Purpose and Objectives 2 major areas Self as Learner Personality Type Through tests that provide insights into my being, who I am, my strengths and weakness how to develop my talent and competences Capitalise on the personal strengths for a perfect career Next slide: Present and Previous Jobs And hopefully, the analysis made will confirm and justify my career choice
  • A bit of a background Support Alliance and channel partners, distributors Play with technology, learn how a huge tech company operates, business culture, politics and power play But slow to change :P take directions from global who does not know local markets :P Before that, I had the best job Start up owner, music, own boss Build business through internet marketing, events Only one in Singapore Close to customer and satisfied when secure deals for bands or when customers buy our CDs But the present business model for music is dying, just like newspaper business :P Next slide: The Wrong Job
  • Introduce campaign for a German recruitment site Why happens when you are in the wrong job? Lack of motivation Limited learning opportunity Stalled personal growth, career path is obscured by self-doubt and uncertainty Common ground between 2: Technology and internet The point I’m trying to make :P Next Click: THE WRONG JOB Next slide: Learning test then VARK
  • Not ‘Context Specific’ Approach: Use one approach to adapt to learning or problem solving Use everything, from many sources, including the internet, talking to people, listening and recalling conversations, even try the problem here Will explain Whole Sense Approach in the next slide Matched shirt with power point presentation? :P Not sure why smell is not here, use smell to judge situation, why car park at Suntec is smelly? I want to know why it is smelly not take for granted Downsides: Too much Perfectionist? Write and rewrite an email for 2hours or so how it sounds when read=best output Next slide:
  • From my experience Never a mechanic, fix bike Never trained in computer, fix computer Not an electrician, install lights for parents and self Not a web designer, build portals, blogs at work Search info Internet is the easiest, but must always very source and use judgement Must always ask and question too HDB story Bought flat at Toa Payoh Comphrehensive learning, reading, studying forums Tiles, flooring, parquet, aircon, TV, electricals, PLUMBING Moved water heater into bathrooms, designed pipe layout to tap into water system, call plumber to install Plumber said “Ah boy, you can become very good plumber ah!” Now I know I have a talent in plumbing
  • Open-minded, always lament that too much theory in NU classes, where’s the interaction! :P and why lecturers do not follow instruction themselves when marking papers! Always looking for next challenge and enjoy new experiences: Why I am presenting first :P In fact, was never in business, for years in Esplanade in technical profession, big career jump Then start up happened, then love for marketing Downsides: Bored in current job? :P Impatient for results, think that problems can always be fixed later But I heard this is a Hong Kong-er mentality? Maybe I can be as successful in business as them :P
  • Highly intuitive Meriam Webster: Quick and ready insight, immediate apprehension or cognition Dictionary.com = “Person of the mind” Wikipedia: Understanding without apparent effort Cambridge: An Ability to understand or know something immediately without needing to think about it Look at slide and point out Balanced Learning Styles Visual+Verbal Confirms mult-modal approach
  • Analytical competences, high level? Not too detailed? Easily understand concept=evident in projects Team members can agree, that I provide concepts and provide a plan based on understanding Global: Digital Marketing, my interest, Too excited, buy books, attend lectures Read through many materials online And I think ‘I GET IT’ NEXT SLIDE: Personality Analysis
  • Intuition, embraced to the outer world, direct thoughts and energy to outer world Issue/Conflict, shy by nature, a learned disposition to overcome, proves some behaviour can be deconstruct and reconstruct Inner world judgment: Close call, Another conflict or blessing? Between Feeling : values/personal belief or Thinking : logic, analytical and detached Use either for convenience For work (analytical) is different when dealing with friends (feeling)
  • Confirmed intuitiveness High level views, instead of granular Long term, instead of short term Combination of both sometimes = pushy “ knows better all the time, should do this or that” People-centric? Want to make the world a better place Two-Faced? Hypocrite?
  • Ideas Enjoy working with people (one sided?) Driven Always bouncing ideas off people Yes, I talk too much Unless it pays the bills or give me good marks for assignments, I may not follow through :P Personal growth, improvements, will cover later Next Slide: Belbin
  • PLANT and SPECIALIST Again this test confirms previous tests Namely Creative Imaginative Problem solver Intuitve Strategic Knowledgeable These are my weaknesses: Not a team worker May not finsh or complete work if not important (smart? P)
  • No ROUTINE work Quoted from the results: Never shy from studying, self-learning, studying for Google Adwords and Google Analytics Qualifications Next challenge : I have registered for a Specialist Diploma in Web Technology, Singapore Poly one year course Begins in October Professional reputation: why I am wearing a tie? :P Get too technical: my wife turns off when I speak about technology
  • Does my Learning and Personality complements each other? Yes!!!!! Lots of linkage Multi-Modal+WholeSense, 360 vs Imaginative, Solver Intuitive vs Apollonian: Always searching for meaning and purpose Innovative vs Early Adopter, Creative Global views vs Strategic learning, further long term vision ahead
  • So perhaps it is confirmed that I am in the wrong job! :P Review Personal branding later
  • Straightforward, where my weakness are and what I need to improve Sharing with you both my passion now. Next Slide: Web 2.0
  • These are FAMILIAR Brands CUSTOMER SHARE, not market share, customer retention, mass marketing has died because of TOO MANY COMPETITION FOR ATTENTION The customers have voices now Conversations, 2 way They use blogs, twitter, social media, aggregators to talk to us, so we have to listen Marketing has changed, its about listening, engaging and sharing, ONE TO ONE marketing Marketing is increasingly digital and social I WANT To be at the forefront of development of current changes to marketing strategies
  • To practice Marketing in the digital domain It’s a specialisation Technology always evolving, always challenging, always something new to learn Why is this job perfect? Creative and Innovative Imaginative Tech Savvy Early Adopter Strategic Global viewpoint, see the big picture Eventually to become a strategist for enterprises to manage their strategy and engagement to customers through technology and the digital web Next slide: CAREER PATH
