• 73rd Annual Fall Conference
Agenda & Registration Here we are again! Another school year has begun. And
what an exciting beginning some of us have had! I hope
• Awards & Recognitions everyone is safe and dry from all the flooding.
• Community Service Project
This newsletter is packed full of information this time
for the Conference
around. We’ve got our 73rd Annual Conference coming
• Scenes from the NAEOP up on October 28 & 29 at the Stoweflake Conference
Conference in Charleston, SC Center. After reviewing the evaluations returned from
previous conferences, we have seen similar responses WELCOME BACK!!
of the difficulty of attending conferences due to lack of
coverage at the office and more technology workshops were wanted.
The VT NEA Days no longer exist and those were the days we normally scheduled the conference on. So we
thought we would try something new! With it being late October, we have all been busy for a couple of
months (or more) and could use a relaxing break, right? Why not enjoy a nice evening at the Stoweflake…..
dinner, meet friends, get a little pampered and experience a day filled with technology training. Exclusive
details are inside this newsletter. I hope you will take this professional opportunity to the fullest.
With the conclusion of this conference, it also marks the end of my term as President. I have had a wonder-
ful two years serving as your president. I have, yet again, grown professionally and have learned so much. I
would highly encourage anyone to step up and become involved with the Association. Rather it is becoming a
member on the board or being a part of a committee. This organization is the only group around that targets
our profession, as far as working with schools and children. I know there are lots of great people out there
with great ideas to share. Get involved! And get others involved! Keep this organization strong!
Speaking of my term ending, means it is election time. You should have received a ballot in the mail to vote
for one person in each office. You can either vote for the name listed or write in a candidate. Please be sure
to return these to Cheri Goldrick by October 7, 2011. If you are a member and did not receive a ballot,
please contact Cheri at 802-626-6451 or Cheryl.goldrick@lyndonstate.edu.
Again, I would like to thank each of you for a great two years and your support while I was president. Even
though I will be on the board as Immediate Past President for the next term, I still plan to be very active in
both the local association and the national association for years to come. I rely on colleagues through both
organizations to help me with questions, concerns or support in my position.
Hope to see you at the Stoweflake!
Glory

Meeting Etiquette
Gary M. Smith, founder of Chatgris Press in New Orleans
A good business meeting is one where all the players show courtesy and respect. This approach conveys
a simple message: We’re all professionals here, so let’s have a productive meeting.
The topic of business meeting etiquette has no established rules on holding courteous meetings. So I’ve
gathered what I’ve learned from my own experience into the following commandments.
1. R.S.V.P. When asked via phone, email, or electronic calendar to attend a business meeting, be sure to reply if a reply is re-
quested. Some meetings are structured and spaces secured on the basis of expected attendance.
2. Come Prepared. Always bring something to write on as well as to write with.
3. Abstain from Electronics. As the notice posted at the beginning of films in movie theaters requests, “Please silence cell
phones and pagers.”
4. Pay Attention. Listen to the issues the speaker addresses, the questions from the attendees, and the answers provided. You
do not want to waste meeting time asking a question that has already been asked.
5. Attend the Entire Meeting. Leave only when the meeting is adjourned. Leaving before the end of the meeting—unless abso-
lutely necessary and unless you have prior permission—can be disruptive to other attendees and inconsiderate of the
speaker.
6. Dress professionally for the meeting. Don’t forget about climate control. Dress in layers if it’s cooler. If it’s too warm in the
room, you can remove a layer.

freshman year at Wagner went very well and finished both semesters on the Dean’s List, where students
must achieve a GPA of 3.5 or higher. She stays involved while at Wagner, has a work study job and is an
active member of the Wagner College Field Hockey Club. In her sophomore year, she plans on getting even

The Special and Urgent Needs (SUN) - Irene Recovery grant round was created to address the
short-term needs of nonprofits directly impacted by Tropical Storm Irene. Please note that this
grant round is open to nonprofits that sustained damage from Irene as well as nonprofits facing
significant resource challenges in providing services for those affected by Irene. We recognize
that Vermont's nonprofit sector is an integral part of our communities and our state, and that
many nonprofits in Vermont lost facilities and materials at a time when their services were
needed most. It is our hope that this fund will help ensure that nonprofit organizations get the
support they so urgently need.
We help people give to the causes they love. Thank you for making a donation to help Irene

Pumpkin Squares With Cider Caramel Sauce
Packed with vitamin-rich pumpkin, these lightly spiced cake squares are a delicious autumn treat.
Our recipe calls for canned or fresh produce (see our recipe for pumpkin puree), and the batter is a
cinch for young chefs to mix up. Kids will also learn a candy-making technique as they prepare the
cider caramel sauce, a not-too-sweet complement to the cake.
Ingredients FOR THE CIDER CARAMEL SAUCE:
• FOR THE PUMPKIN SQUARES: • 1/2 cup brown sugar, packed
• 1 cup sugar • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
• 1 1/2 cups flour • 2/3 cup apple cider
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder • 2 tablespoons heavy cream
• 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda • 1 tablespoon butter
• 1 1/2 teaspoons cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice • Salt to taste
• 1/2 teaspoon salt
• 3/4 cup vegetable oil
• 1 (15-ounce) can of pumpkin or 2 cups fresh pureed
pumpkin
• 2 large eggs, lightly beaten
• Ice cream for serving (optional)
Instructions
1. Heat the oven to 325º. Grease a 9- by 13-inch baking pan and set it aside.
2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the first six ingredients for the squares. Add the oil,
pumpkin, and eggs, and whisk until the batter is evenly blended. Pour the batter into the
prepared pan and smooth the top.
3. Bake the cake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean, about 30 min-
utes. Remove the pan and allow it to cool completely on a wire rack, about 1 1/2 hours.
4. Just before serving the cake squares, make the cider caramel sauce. In a medium-size
saucepan, whisk together the brown sugar and cornstarch. Add the cider and stir well to
dissolve the other ingredients. Cook the mixture over medium-high heat, whisking con-
stantly, until large bubbles form around the perimeter of the pan, about 3 minutes. Re-
duce the heat to low and allow the sauce to continue to simmer until it thickens, about 2
minutes more.
5. Remove the sauce from the heat and whisk in the cream and the butter. Let the sauce
cool slightly, then taste it and add a pinch of salt, if necessary.
6. To serve the dessert, cut the baked cake into 3-inch squares and top each with a scoop
of ice cream, if you like, and a drizzle of warm cider caramel sauce. Makes 12 squares
and about a cup of sauce.
