The mast head of this magazine is in lowercase pink, bold font
with a thick, white border. This automatically gives the
impression of a feminine theme and a female target audience. It
is in bold font across the top of the page which makes it stand
put and the main image is covering some of the letters, meaning
it’s a well-known magazine as we still know what it says.

The main image is of Cheryl Cole who is known
as a pop icon and a fashion icon to loads of
females. It is a medium shot of her in the
centre of the page with her eye line in the hot
spot which grabs the attention of the reader
straight away. She is dressed in a smart, white
top with her hair styled with neat curls, and
her makeup is glamorous and girly. This gives
the magazine a glamorous as well as girly
theme. Just under the image of Cheryl is a pug
saying ‘YOU CAN BE CHERYL’ and underneath
a sub selling line saying ‘Her top-to-toe guide
to real star style’ giving more information on
the main part. This will instantly attract
readers to buy the magazine if they like Cheryl,
as she is an icon and people aspire to be like
her.
The barcode has been placed in the
bottom left hand corner which is
following conventions as this is known
as dead space. This means that it isn’t
taking up any valuable space and your
attention won’t be brought straight to
that.

The header has a small close up picture of Zac
Efron who will attract a female audience as he was
a star in Disney’s high school musical. It says
beside the picture ‘Bust ups, cringes and crazy
fans’ this shows that this will all be included inside
the magazine and people who are interested in
him, will buy this magazine.
Here there is a small close up picture of
the singer Diana Vickers and underneath is
a cover line relating to the pictures which
says ‘DIANA: My embarrassing body
worries’ The picture follows conventions as
her eye line is in the hotspot meaning it
would catch your attention immediately.
Furthermore, this is a female magazine and
it is mostly females who have body
worries. This article would relate to many
females and would give them a sense of
security that even celebrities do too.

This ‘Exclusive’ box has a close up picture
of Joe Mceldery and it says in the pink box
‘Can Joe be as big as Bieber?’ By calling it
an Exclusive, it makes it seem personal
and exclusive to only you and that you
can only find it in this magazine. This
would encourage the reader to read on as
they would be interested in finding out
this unique gossip.
This cover line has ’10 pages of’ in a medium black font against a white background, and
underneath it has ‘Shopping heaven!’ in a larger white font against a purple, girly background
which would appeal to a female audience. Above it is a medium shot of Selena Gomez and 3
pictures of clothing with labels attached to tell you where they’re from. This challenges
conventions as it has been placed in dead space, however as it is a large cover line, it still attracts
your attention. This could also attract the reader as Selena Gomez is seen as a pop icon to some
young girls and therefore, they may be interested to read about her.
The header on this page ‘inside the mag’ tells you that this
page will tell you what you can find inside. The font is in a
style that would appeal to a younger female audience, and
this page has carried on the feminine colour scheme of pink
and white by putting white font against a pink header
The contents lists have been separated
into different boxes with different
subheadings in a swirly black font that
gives it a feminine but sophisticated
touch. ‘We boys ‘tells the reader that
they have highlighted everywhere that
you can find out about ‘what’s inside
boys heads’ or pages that include
pictures ‘to stare at’. This would appeal
to a young female audience as there are
many young boy artists and bands that
have lots of girl fans. This could
encourage girls to buy this magazine as
there are a lot of pages that have been
highlighted.

The main image is of the front cover of
the magazine. It is following conventions
as it has been placed in the top left and
this means that the reader’s attention
will be drawn to that hotspot first. The
picture has arrows coming off it with
page numbers in large pink font which
lets you know where the stories/articles
on the front page cover lines will be; this
makes it easier for the reader to find the
pages they want

‘We shopping’ includes pictures of
a jumper, an eyeliner and a shoe with
a large pink number by each one to
indicate where you can find them if
you like them. This would appeal to a
female audience as girls
stereotypically love shopping and
would therefore be interested in
buying this magazine for this.

‘All about you’ makes these particular
pages personal to you. It makes the
reader feel involved in the magazine and
it makes you feel as if they are talking
directly to you

‘Celebs and gossip’ gives the page
numbers of all the pages that include
articles/gossip/stories on artists and
bands that would appeal to a female
audience that are interested in a pop
genre. This makes it easier for the reader
to find the page they want.

This wins and offers box encourages
readers to buy the magazine as they
know they could have a chance to
win something. They also offer
vouchers for shops that would
appeal to a young, female audience

The other picture is in a circular shape and is a
medium close up of the band One Direction. They
are wearing casual jackets and t-shirts which
represents their age and also relates with their
teen audience. Their picture is placed here
because on page 62 there is an article about One
Direction
The headline is placed in the top right hand corner which follows
conventions as this is a hotspot in the rule of thirds for a headline. It
is in a white bold font against a thick, purple outline making it stand
out to the reader and these colours also appear to the female
audience
The text on this page follows
the colour scheme of pink,
purple and white. The
strapline under the head
line is in pink writing, and
the name of the band is in
black to make it stand out
and make it clear what this
article is about. The text is
set out as an interview with
the questions in purple, the
name of the band member
talking in pink, and the
answer in black. On the right
hand side of the page is a
separate text box saying
‘You’re gorgeous too!’ in
pink and purple writing. This
makes it seem as if they are
talking directly to you and as
lots of girls are fans of this
band, this could make girls
feel special and have more
self-confidence.

The colour scheme is consistent on this page
of purple, pink and white. These colours are
appealing to its intended target audience of
young females

The main image of this page is of a
band called The Wanted. There is a
long shot/medium long shot of each
member of the band and the headline
‘Workout wonders’ relates to the main
image as they are all placed around the
theme of a gym, holding gym
equipment. This suggests that the
audience for this magazine are not as
interested in a serious and
sophisticated magazine, but are more
interested in the band members’ lives
and personalities. Coming from each
image is a speech box which quotes
what each band member have said.
They have said things that would relate
to a teenage audience as they say
things like, “I would do anything not to
work out” This may interest the reader
as they would most likely expect the
opposite. The main image shows all the
band members’ faces as happy and
smiley which reflects the feel-good
mood of a pop genre. There are
smaller images placed around the
page. One is in the top right hand
corner which is a similar image as the
main one but they are holding slightly
different poses. Another one is a
medium long shot of just one of the
band members placed in the middle of
the text.

Task 2 - Top of the Pops analysis

  • 1. This cover line is in a bold pink font saying ‘LONELY JUSTIN’. This carries on the feminine colour scheme which will be appealing to a female audience. There is a close up of Justin Bieber above the cover line letting us know that it is about him. The mast head of this magazine is in lowercase pink, bold font with a thick, white border. This automatically gives the impression of a feminine theme and a female target audience. It is in bold font across the top of the page which makes it stand put and the main image is covering some of the letters, meaning it’s a well-known magazine as we still know what it says. The main image is of Cheryl Cole who is known as a pop icon and a fashion icon to loads of females. It is a medium shot of her in the centre of the page with her eye line in the hot spot which grabs the attention of the reader straight away. She is dressed in a smart, white top with her hair styled with neat curls, and her makeup is glamorous and girly. This gives the magazine a glamorous as well as girly theme. Just under the image of Cheryl is a pug saying ‘YOU CAN BE CHERYL’ and underneath a sub selling line saying ‘Her top-to-toe guide to real star style’ giving more information on the main part. This will instantly attract readers to buy the magazine if they like Cheryl, as she is an icon and people aspire to be like her. The barcode has been placed in the bottom left hand corner which is following conventions as this is known as dead space. This means that it isn’t taking up any valuable space and your attention won’t be brought straight to that. The header has a small close up picture of Zac Efron who will attract a female audience as he was a star in Disney’s high school musical. It says beside the picture ‘Bust ups, cringes and crazy fans’ this shows that this will all be included inside the magazine and people who are interested in him, will buy this magazine. Here there is a small close up picture of the singer Diana Vickers and underneath is a cover line relating to the pictures which says ‘DIANA: My embarrassing body worries’ The picture follows conventions as her eye line is in the hotspot meaning it would catch your attention immediately. Furthermore, this is a female magazine and it is mostly females who have body worries. This article would relate to many females and would give them a sense of security that even celebrities do too. This ‘Exclusive’ box has a close up picture of Joe Mceldery and it says in the pink box ‘Can Joe be as big as Bieber?’ By calling it an Exclusive, it makes it seem personal and exclusive to only you and that you can only find it in this magazine. This would encourage the reader to read on as they would be interested in finding out this unique gossip. This cover line has ’10 pages of’ in a medium black font against a white background, and underneath it has ‘Shopping heaven!’ in a larger white font against a purple, girly background which would appeal to a female audience. Above it is a medium shot of Selena Gomez and 3 pictures of clothing with labels attached to tell you where they’re from. This challenges conventions as it has been placed in dead space, however as it is a large cover line, it still attracts your attention. This could also attract the reader as Selena Gomez is seen as a pop icon to some young girls and therefore, they may be interested to read about her.
  • 2. The header on this page ‘inside the mag’ tells you that this page will tell you what you can find inside. The font is in a style that would appeal to a younger female audience, and this page has carried on the feminine colour scheme of pink and white by putting white font against a pink header The contents lists have been separated into different boxes with different subheadings in a swirly black font that gives it a feminine but sophisticated touch. ‘We boys ‘tells the reader that they have highlighted everywhere that you can find out about ‘what’s inside boys heads’ or pages that include pictures ‘to stare at’. This would appeal to a young female audience as there are many young boy artists and bands that have lots of girl fans. This could encourage girls to buy this magazine as there are a lot of pages that have been highlighted. The main image is of the front cover of the magazine. It is following conventions as it has been placed in the top left and this means that the reader’s attention will be drawn to that hotspot first. The picture has arrows coming off it with page numbers in large pink font which lets you know where the stories/articles on the front page cover lines will be; this makes it easier for the reader to find the pages they want ‘We shopping’ includes pictures of a jumper, an eyeliner and a shoe with a large pink number by each one to indicate where you can find them if you like them. This would appeal to a female audience as girls stereotypically love shopping and would therefore be interested in buying this magazine for this. ‘All about you’ makes these particular pages personal to you. It makes the reader feel involved in the magazine and it makes you feel as if they are talking directly to you ‘Celebs and gossip’ gives the page numbers of all the pages that include articles/gossip/stories on artists and bands that would appeal to a female audience that are interested in a pop genre. This makes it easier for the reader to find the page they want. This wins and offers box encourages readers to buy the magazine as they know they could have a chance to win something. They also offer vouchers for shops that would appeal to a young, female audience The other picture is in a circular shape and is a medium close up of the band One Direction. They are wearing casual jackets and t-shirts which represents their age and also relates with their teen audience. Their picture is placed here because on page 62 there is an article about One Direction
  • 3. The headline is placed in the top right hand corner which follows conventions as this is a hotspot in the rule of thirds for a headline. It is in a white bold font against a thick, purple outline making it stand out to the reader and these colours also appear to the female audience The text on this page follows the colour scheme of pink, purple and white. The strapline under the head line is in pink writing, and the name of the band is in black to make it stand out and make it clear what this article is about. The text is set out as an interview with the questions in purple, the name of the band member talking in pink, and the answer in black. On the right hand side of the page is a separate text box saying ‘You’re gorgeous too!’ in pink and purple writing. This makes it seem as if they are talking directly to you and as lots of girls are fans of this band, this could make girls feel special and have more self-confidence. The colour scheme is consistent on this page of purple, pink and white. These colours are appealing to its intended target audience of young females The main image of this page is of a band called The Wanted. There is a long shot/medium long shot of each member of the band and the headline ‘Workout wonders’ relates to the main image as they are all placed around the theme of a gym, holding gym equipment. This suggests that the audience for this magazine are not as interested in a serious and sophisticated magazine, but are more interested in the band members’ lives and personalities. Coming from each image is a speech box which quotes what each band member have said. They have said things that would relate to a teenage audience as they say things like, “I would do anything not to work out” This may interest the reader as they would most likely expect the opposite. The main image shows all the band members’ faces as happy and smiley which reflects the feel-good mood of a pop genre. There are smaller images placed around the page. One is in the top right hand corner which is a similar image as the main one but they are holding slightly different poses. Another one is a medium long shot of just one of the band members placed in the middle of the text.
