Overview
From David Baldacci--#1 bestselling author and one of the world's most popular,
widely read storytellers--comes the most thrilling novel of the year. THE HIT Will
Robie is a master of killing. A highly skilled assassin, Robie is the man the U.S.
government calls on to eliminate the worst of the worst-enemies of the state,
monsters committed to harming untold numbers of innocent victims. No one else
can match Robie's talents as a hitman...no one, except Jessica Reel. A fellow
assassin, equally professional and dangerous, Reel is every bit as lethal as
Robie. And now, she's gone rogue, turning her gun sights on other members of
their agency. To stop one of their own, the government looks again to Will
Robie. His mission: bring in Reel, dead or alive. Only a killer can catch another
killer, they tell him. But as Robie pursues Reel, he quickly finds that there is
more to her betrayal than meets the eye. Her attacks on the agency conceal a
larger threat, a threat that could send shockwaves through the U.S. government
and around the world.
Reviews
'The Hit', authored by David Badacci was absolutely mind-boggling!!
Will Robie and Jessica Reel are both professional, highly skilled assassins
deployed by the U. S. government to eliminate enemies of the state and
monsters committed to harming untold numbers of innocent victims. Reel is just
as lethal as Robie, but she's gone rogue, turning her gun sights on other
members of their agency. Nobody understands the 'why' behind this, but to try
to stop one of their own, the governments looks again to Will Robie to bring in
Reel, dead or alive. It is the agency's premise that only a killer can catch
another killer, which pitts Robie and Reel against one another. The two had
started out training together, worked together for a time, and came to know one
another well; each has a deep abiding respect for the talents and skills of the
other. As Robie begins to pursue Reel, he very soon realizes there is more to her
betrayal than what he's been told. Her attacks on the agency conceal a much
larger threat that will send shock waves through the U.S. government and
around the world.
In an attempt to try to protect a woman in the #2 position in his agency, Robie
goes to her home in a very sparsely populated area, and is amazed to learn she
has only two men guarding her....particularly with two men high up in the
agency already having been murdered. While the two are conversing inside,
Robie hears muffled shots and discovers the two guards have been fatally
wounded. He knows there are too many adversaries for him to successfully
protect the woman in this situation and determines he needs to take her with
him and flee, but she is shot before he can get her to his car. It is greatly
surprising for him to realize a woman secluded behind trees is shooting at the
enemy with a long distance rifle, which gives Robie time enough to get the gal
he is trying to protect into a different vehicle that is far safer. He isn't positive,
but is convinced the woman aiding him was Jessica, which only adds to his
confusion about the true state of things.
It is cloak and dagger stuff going on with the government agencies. Robie has
always followed orders without question in the past, but he begins to wonder if
now is the time to be more discriminatory because his people in the upper
positions are being killed. He is almost certain Jessica is the shooter killing them,
but can't believe she could be 'turned' and begins to seek answers as to why she
would do this. The only way to find out is to find Jessica and talk to her before
she kills him. This book most definitely keeps one on the edge of their seat
throughout, and when finished reading it, be totally awestruck that anyone's
mind has the ability to contrive such an intricate government plot. Highly
recommend this book! I started this book on a Friday and couldn't put it down
until i finished it on Sunday. Truly wonderful read!
At the end of the very first chapter, I wished I could stay in my comfortable
chair as long as it took to finish this book. By the time the second chapter
ended, well, let's just say the laundry didn't get done as planned and dinner was
a couple of hours late. That said, I should have known that would happen; last
April, I read The Innocent, the first of author Baldacci's series featuring unofficial
government hitman Will Robie, and I didn't want that one to end either.
Will is, of course, the best there is at his job, save perhaps one other: A
hitwoman named Jessica Reel. And when Jessica suddenly goes off the grid and
starts assassinating members of the government agency that employs her (and
Will), guess who the powers that be pick to track her down and, if necessary, kill
her?
Needless to say, it's not that simple. Not only will Jessica prove to be a more-
than-worthy opponent for Will, it's possible she's not a traitor at all, but rather
trying to eliminate a clandestine plan orchestrated by someone (or several
someones) inside the agency that threatens the well-being of governments
throughout the world. It's up to Will to determine which side she's really on -
and then to decide how he'll proceed from there.
Figuring that out takes quite a few plot twists and turns, and to a certain degree,
some of it is expected. I did get a couple of chuckles along the way, especially
when Will "watched an ad for Cialis with an older man and woman in bathtubs
that were set outside. It was apparently a sexual metaphor he had never figured
out." You're not alone, Will - try as I might, I just don't get it either.
Given all the goings-on between Will and Jessica, there seemed to me to be only
two ways the book could end, but thanks to Baldacci's great skill as a writer of
thrillers, I couldn't be sure which would happen until the last couple of chapters.
The final few pages set the stage for the next installment - and you can bet I'm
already chomping at the bit to read that one as well!
The Hit is David Baldacci's latest novel and it is one of his best works. Once you
start reading it, you will not be able to put it down until the very last page of the
last chapter.
The story revolves around two of the US government's top assassins, Will Robie
and Jessica Reel. It starts when an assignment to assassinate a Middle Eastern
politician ends in the death of the man who is supervising the entire operation.
The suspected killer is the agency's only woman assassin -- Jessica Reel. The
agency now considers her a rogue agent and a murderer. To find Reel, the
agency ropes in its best operative, Will Robie. But as Robie goes about his new
task of finding Reel, he learns that she is one of the very best and that he has
his work cut out for him.
Jessica knows that she is being hunted down and that she has very little time to
complete the task she has set out for herself. She needs to make sure she
"takes care" of all the people in her "list." And after she manages to target the
agency's number two, things are getting extremely difficult for her. Plus, she
knows she may not stand a chance against the best of the best -- Will Robie.
Robie finds out that tracking down Jessica is not going to be easy. To make
things more difficult, it seems the files the agency has given him are incomplete.
He begins to feel that there is more to the case than meets the eye. Jessica
must have her reasons and he intends to find out what they are. As Will is about
to catch a break, the person he is meeting gets attacked and is shot before she
could give him more information. As Will tries to save her life and his own, he
gets help from someone he suspects to be Reel. But why would Reel help Robie?
There is definitely something going on and Will finds that he cannot trust
anyone.
David Baldacci has gotten his groove back with this novel. There are so many
unpredictable twists and turns which will leave the reader hooked. Although the
way things were going with Robie and Reel, I could almost see how the book
was going to end, the last chapter leaves the door open for another book in the
Will Robie series. I can't wait for that next book to be published.
I don’t know how David Baldacci managed to write two great novels in a row but
he did, and that’s what counts. A few months ago he surprised us with the
second instalment of his John Puller series “The Forgotten”, which was much
better than the first novel, and now he pulls the same trick with his Will Robie
vehicle “The Hit”.
If there’s one thing someone can always come to expect from a Baldacci novel is
high-octane action, unconventional heroes, conspiracy theories and enough
twists and turns to make their head spin. If you add to that mix the “sympathy
for the devil” element, then you’ll come to understand what this book is all
about.
I’m not saying that Will Robie is the devil, but he’s as close to him as they come,
since he’s a gun for hire; though the US government’s gun for hire. He’s a cold-
blooded assassin, someone who’s supposed to have no feelings, who’s trained to
follow orders without any second thought, and who’s not supposed to have a
mind of his own. But is that even humanly possible? At first glance it looks as it
is, but as the plot unravels and the mysteries, as well as the bodies, start piling
up, things seem to change. And soon enough Robie doesn’t only start to
question the motives of his superiors, but also those of himself. He’s supposed
to be the good guy, no matter what he does; he’s serving his country; but are
the rest of the people just as patriotic, or in some cases blindsided as he is?
That’s not the only question that arises in his mind though; there are too many
to list. Could he one day have a normal life? Could he connect with people like
others do? Was he right to stay afar from the girl whose life he saved? Could he
be loved? As one can easily guess, Robie is damaged goods. However, as it
seems, he’s not in this hell of a life all alone. There’s a rogue agent who’s in just
a bad place, or even worst, as he is. And there are people, who in the names of
patriotism or ambition, are willing to do just about everything; even become
mass murderers, if that’s what it takes.
Baldacci has given us yet another explosive novel, with lots of action and well-
drawn characters that can take one’s breath away, and which I’ve read in one
sit. I’d highly recommend it to all his faithful fans, but also to anyone else out
there who enjoys a good thriller.
David Baldacci never ceases to amaze me. Ok, sometimes he does but more
often then not he writes a very tight exciting story. :-) This one was one of his
best suspense thriller novels. The characters were well defined, and the action
was non stop. This is the world in 2013 and if you believe that there are
segments of our government that are not in synch with what most of us would
believe would be the best interests of democracy, then you will really love this
incredibly exciting page turner. I became totally invested in the two leads and
felt for them throughout the book as they chased one another to the truth. This
was fast paced and very scary on many levels including the knowledge that
there are those in our country that want armed rebellion to bring down our
elected government. Will stay with this series as i will for most of Baldacci's
books.

And there are people, who in the names of patriotism or ambition, are willing to do just about everything; even become mass murderers, if that’s what it takes. Baldacci has given us yet another explosive novel, with lots of action and well- drawn characters that can take one’s breath away, and which I’ve read in one sit. I’d highly recommend it to all his faithful fans, but also to anyone else out there who enjoys a good thriller. David Baldacci never ceases to amaze me. Ok, sometimes he does but more often then not he writes a very tight exciting story. :-) This one was one of his best suspense thriller novels. The characters were well defined, and the action was non stop. This is the world in 2013 and if you believe that there are segments of our government that are not in synch with what most of us would believe would be the best interests of democracy, then you will really love this incredibly exciting page turner. I became totally invested in the two leads and felt for them throughout the book as they chased one another to the truth. This was fast paced and very scary on many levels including the knowledge that there are those in our country that want armed rebellion to bring down our elected government. Will stay with this series as i will for most of Baldacci's books. To download now please click the link below. http://amzn.to/10TBgul
