FosterClub::Connect
An Intro to FosterClub’s Web 2.0 Features
Presented by FosterClub

Editor's Notes
<number>Are you all familiar with FosterClub?Founded in Seaside 1999 by a foster parent who saw a need in the foster care system, FosterClub was established on the principal that self-advocacy, access to information and youth involvement are keys to youth well-being in foster care. <number>
<number>
<number>
<number>
Content frequently changed through editorial calendarLanding spot for FosterClub.com, .net, .orgWhere we promote the newest content; serves as a gateway for the rest of the siteYouth Friendly designWe like to think that the graphics and text are pretty hip and youth friendly, like you’d see at any other social networking site <number>
The Main Menu is on the left side of every page on the site other than the home page.I was going to take a moment to showcase a few of these sectionsThe Questions and Answers Section is a way for young people to access information whenever they need it.Information is in a question and answer format, with answers that are both youth friendly, like a teen magazine, while, at the same time, have been reviewed by child welfare expertsThe Q+A section was designed with this specific audience in mind. For example, many young people want information, but have learning disabilities or aren’t really strong readers, so we have a read it to me feature that we are in the process of adding to these pages.<number>
Some people learn better with hard copies, so all the pages are printable <number>
The real stories section contains stories about some young leaders, many of which are FosterClub All-Stars, providing the background on these inspirational role models. <number>
The Foster to Famous section is always one of the most popular sections on the site.It’s a lot like the real stories section, except that the bios are about folks like Eddie Murphy, Cher, and Willie Nelson. that have been in foster care are now celebrities. <number>
We allow and encourage our members to add comments to pages on the siteIf someone is not logged in, they can still add comments to the site, which are anonymous. However, all anonymous comments are screened prior to appearing on the site to make sure the comment doesn’t break our safety policy. No personal contact information, like e-mails or phone numbers. Typically we’ll screen for anonymous comments a couple times are day. As an additional safety layer, whenever a comment from a member is posted, an e-mail of the comment is automatically sent to FosterClub staff. <number>
This is what an unpublished comment looks likeUnless someone is logged in as an administrator, they wouldn’t be able to see this unpublished comment.<number>
FosterClub has created 5 special interest clubs. The content is built specifically for people interested in this topic.For people transitioning out of care, there’s the Transition Club. Great place for information on scholarships, as well as free publications like our Permanency Pact, or information about NYTDMembers can sign up to join a club in order to receive automatic e-mails whenever new content is added<number>
For people interested in advocating for young people in foster care and upcoming foster care legislation, there’s the Advocacy ClubFor people interested in learning more about the All-Star Program, there’s the All-Star Club. It’s also where’d you go to read the All-Star bio pages and their blogsFor people interested upcoming foster care and child welfare events, there’s the Events Club
For people interested in programs and tools that supportive adults can use to help young people in foster care, there’s the Booster Club. The Booster Club is also the place for information about our sponsors and partners [like the state of Oregon] that help our network thrive. And also content for best practices for youth engagement <number><number>
The message board is located on a grey tab on top of every pagePlace where young people feel comfortable receiving and giving advice because they may not have a safety net in their area or a place where they can have their questions answered anonymouslyThis a also a place where our All-Stars pipe in a lot to give adviceQuestions seem to get answered very quickly because our members have ownership of their networkThere’s both a youth and adult message board. You’re looking at the youth board, which is usually a flurry of activity<number>
If you click on a message thread, this is what it looks like.Only someone logged in can post on the message board. Every time a member adds content to the site, whether that be a comment, starting a new message board thread, or responding to a message on a the message board, they receive points.Right now the points aren’t worth anything, but in the future we’re planning on allowing users to cash in points for digital rewards, like extra bling for their avatar, or whatever creative ideas we can come up with.Once logged in, a member’s points show up on the top right of every page on the site. <number>
Always On: Anyone with internet access can find out the information they need 24/7Anonymous: Because of anonymity, people tend to be more comfortable to talk about feelings that they might not otherwise sharePeer Support: new members are immediately plugged in to a network of over 25,000 and growingNo boundaries: Universal issues everyone can connect on, non matter where someone is located<number>
Here’s an example of a members profile pageYou’ll notice that there’s no specific information that would breach confidentialityAn area where members can provided some information about themselves<number>
If you scrolled down on the page you’d noticed that each profile has it’s own wall where members can post message that are automatically sent to the recipient.In order to ensure safety, there is no private messaging: all messages are available for all to see.
We created an avatar factory, where members can select their own digital image of themselves, by selecting their own background, skin color, hair, etc.This is central to social networking- to have your own identity<number><number>
Often the 1st thing new members do is check the home page for their avatar. The home page also lists the weeks point leaders and the days birthdays.The point leaders are on a weekly basis because that helps ensure that a larger # of members are recognized as point leaders You’ll also noticed the frequently requesting information section, which is found on the bottom every page on the siteOn the right are the latest postings on the message boards<number>
Another cool feature is how youth groups can create their own presence on the site.<number>
<number>
<number>
<number>
Now we’re really going to bet into the nuts and bolts of what we’re going to talk aboutWe have a fundamental philosophy that all young people should have access to all the information they need.The will continue to have access to all parts of the site whether or not a state is a subscriber or not.However, there are some additional features that states will be able to utilize to engage with their youth<number>
This is the state by state page. Eventually we’d like to have a map of all 50 states here, but for the meantime, we have an equally effective yet much less stylish table.Every member of the state is automatically opted in as a member of their state groupThat means they automatically get an e-mail update when any new content is added to their state’s page<number>
Most of the state pages are pretty similar at this point, but this is what the Oregon page currently looks like.The FosterClub menu is still on the left hand side, but you’ll also notice an additional menu on the right hand side titled ‘resources’The resources section has a statistics section that has statistics specific to Oregon, There’s also a higher education section with information about ETV and scholarships, for exampleStates that subscribe will have control over how this menu reads and virtually all the content on this page.While FosterClub will occaisionally add content to the state section, subscribing states will be able to add content on demandThat latest information also automatically appears under ‘What’s New @ Oregon’, just like the Club pages.All members of each state receive an automatic e-mail with a link to the page when new content is added.<number>
This is what the Youth Events Resource page looks likeThis is a flexible publishing systemIt’s is very easy to link to other pages on the site, external pages outside of FosterClub like your own site, or even other word documentsThe pages can be edited at any timeGreat way to distribute material<number>
This is an example of the resource page titled Oregon Procedure Manual that links directly to the appropriate DHS page. Again, this can be fully customizable and provide one or several links additional resources <number>
The concept is that there’s a point person for each state page that will be trained by FosterClub staff on how to add content to the site.This point person could be a staff member, or a youth leadership opportunity for a youth or group of youth in their state.This point person could also be designated as an ambassador, who could answer any questions from members from you stateWe’re looking into eventually turning this into a formal internship, complete with a training session in Seaside, monthly conference calls where ambassadors share ideas about creating stories for their page.FosterClub would be able to serve as an accounting function and some level of supervision.One issue we’ve had is that every year around 300 amazing young people apply to be an All-Star and we can only take 12. This would be another leadership opportunity.While this hasn’t been formulated yet, we’ve gotten a lot of good feedback on the idea. Let us know, and we can help you set it up.<number>
I wanted to point out the sharing features on the top of every page.You can forward to a friend, share with other social networks, or report as inappropriateIt’s a good way to use FosterClub as a launching pad for other social networking sites.So youth in your state can publish to other youth. That’s what we call viral.<number>
This is our executive directors Facebook page. As you can see, she clicked on the share on Facebook button from a page on the website to automatically place a FosterClub page on her Facebook profile<number>
States which subscribe will also receive reporting capability through Google Analytics.Which is a great way to determine how many people are looking at your site, what pages they’re looking at, and where these viewers are from.<number>
For example, here’s a map of Oregon showing the amount of visits on the Oregon state pages from throughout the state<number>
Here’s a graph of daily visitors to the Oregon state page, the average pages per visit, average time on site, and a few other metrics for a recent 30 day period.<number>
This how the visitors got to the Oregon state page, whether through Google or another search engine, or through another page on the siteThere’s a ton of reporting capability and we’re just scratching the surface.Reports can be set up to be e-mailed to whoever you designate daily, weekly, monthly – whatever you’d like.<number>
For subscribers, this is a way they could link to any surveysOne way you might access your youth for NYTD<number>
This is an example of a survey recently created. As you can see, it can be built right into the page.Every entry filled out for this form automatically populates a spreadsheet<number>
I mentioned earlier automatic e-mails sent to members. Here’s an example of a message that went to member who had already added a comment to a page on the site, thus becoming part of the message thread. In this example, this is a comment that was placed on an Outstanding Young Leader Page, which is award we presented in May to 100 amazing young people in foster care this May.You can see that the member can click on a link to go to the web page or unsubscribe from future messages on this message thread.<number>
Here’s an example of a member who has subscribed to the All-Star Club, so whenever new material, so as a new blog is added to the site, they receive an e-mail.<number>
FosterClub periodically send out an enews letter to it members, typically about once a month. This newsletter provides links to FosterClub pagesThis is an example of one page which was a April Fools joke involving Josh Shipp who is a motivational speaker and from foster care where Josh tells our members that he discovered that his biological father is Chuck Norris.We will consider material from FosterClub:Connect subscribers in our enews publications<number>
Like with state pages, we have extensive reporting capabilities for our enews publications<number>
We have the ability to help with marketing and have authorized photos that FosterClub:Connect subscribers can access<number>
