         Independent and Dependent Clauses
A clause is a group of words that contains a subject (a noun or noun phrase) and apredicate (a simple
verb or compound verb phrase, along with any objectscomplementing the verb). Clauses are of two
types: independent and dependent. The firsttype is also known as a main clause; the second type is also
known as a subordinate orrelative clause.
