A translation by Elizabeth Carter (1717-1806) of The Enchiridion, or Handbook of Epictetus, a short manual of Stoic ethical advice compiled by Arrian, a pupil of Epictetus at the beginning of the 2nd century. Epictetus was born a slave in 55 AD but became an influential philosopher in Rome and later in Greece. He died in 135 AD.
