Keep Your Alternator Running With the
Proper Alternator Pulley
The alternator pulley is a part of the alternator which works
continuously to produce electricity which is routed to your
vehicles systems and accessories. With more and more
vehicle accessories being used today, such as GPS, Bluetooth,
satellite radio, cell phone chargers and IPod stations your
car’s energy is being drained more than ever before.
Therefore, it is extremely important to ensure the parts of
your vehicle (mainly the alternator, battery and voltage
regulator) that power your vehicle’s accessories and systems
keep the important components like heat, air and lights
going when you need them. In order to do this, you need to
ensure the alternator, battery and voltage regulator are in
good condition and well maintained.
Many people believe it is the battery alone that powers your
vehicles accessories and systems, which is not entirely
accurate. While your vehicle is running the alternator
produces electricity that is routed to your vehicles systems.
The alternator’s electrical current helps recharge the battery
and the voltage regulator ensures that the system doesn’t
over-charge the battery and that the correct voltage is
maintained in your vehicle. Therefore, it is actually these
three parts (the battery, alternator and voltage regulator)
that keep your vehicle powered.

The alternator has many parts that are needed to make it
work, however without a good drive belt & pulley the
alternator is useless. The drive belt loops around the pulley
which is connected to the rotor shaft inside the alternator.
The drive belt is powered by the crankshaft. As the
crankshaft turns the belt turns causing the pulley and rotor
shaft to rotate. This engages the alternator and helps it
generate power for the accessories and systems. Therefore,
it is important to keep these parts clean and well maintained
in order to help improve the longevity of your alternator and
to ensure your vehicle will be adequately powered when you
need it.
There are a number of reasons that the alternator can fail:
• When you jumpstart a battery because it has lost its
charge you may accidentally over load the alternator
• The drive belt and pulley can wear down over time
• Your alternators parts like the drive belt and pulley can
suffer stress from extreme weather conditions,
hindering their performance
• The bearings inside the assembly that influence the
rotation of the rotor shaft can begin to fail, which will
make the rotor less capable of rotating efficiently. The
result is that the alternator will produce an insufficient
charge and eventually stop working altogether
Prolong the Life of your Alternator
You can increase the life of your alternator by:
• Ensuring that posts and cable connections on your

battery are free of corrosion. If these parts become
corroded the charge may have trouble travelling from
the alternator to the battery
• Checking your battery’s connection once every 2 – 3
weeks
• Ensuring your drive belt is in good condition. To do this,
look for signs of wear and deterioration on the drive
belt, such as cracking. If you notice any cracking,
peeling or other signs of wear you should replace the
belt
Properly caring for your alternator by ensuring that its parts
like the alternator pulley are well maintained will help you
improve the life of your alternator and will ensure your
vehicle runs reliably.
