5. KWN COMPANY EVENT REPORT On February 28, the award ceremony for the KWN Japan contest was held in Tokyo. Eight awards, including the script, videography, art, and Grand Prix Award, were presented to the finalists. This year's entries from KWN Japan stood out by basing their stories on the history of their local communities while attempting to address larger themes, such as the many problems of war and the importance of life. Among the entries, 'A "Monumental" Message -For Us Living in the Future-,' from the Okazaki Public Elementary School in Aichi Prefecture, was highly praised by the judges for both the theme and its superb composition, and was presented with the Grand Prix Award. South Korea to digitise school textbooks to lighten backpacks Seoul, June 29 (BERNAMA) – South Korea will digitise all school textbooks by 2015, in a bid to help students create their own study patterns and lighten their backpacks, Yonhap news agency reported Wednesday. Under the plan, which requires 2.23 trillion won (US$ 2.07 billion) from the state budget, all schools will be fitted with an internet-based computing system known as cloud computing by 2015. According to a report submitted to President Lee-MyungBak by The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology and The President’s Council on Informatisation Strategies, the government hopes that this new educational tool will help students to establish their own study patterns based on individual needs by giving them the online access to their lessons and other educational resources.
7. “Digital textbooks are also expected to remove the physical burden of carrying heavy paper textbooks, which will remain in use for the time being, as well as the financial burden of purchasing them,” Yonhap quoted the report as saying. The plan is to introduce digitised textbooks in elementary schools in 2014 and expand their use to middle and high schools the following year, the government said. The announcement comes shortly after the government said it aims to become a global cloud computing leader by 2015. The global cloud computing market is expected to grow from some 31 trillion won (USD28.78 billion) this year to more than 60 trillion won (USD55.70 billion) in 2014.
