Are resumesdead
1. Is the resume finally dead?
Hell, NO!
Why do people think so?
Lots of bad information out there,
for example:
2. CNN asks, “Are social media
making resumes obsolete?”
They’re really confusing people. . .
3. CNN: “What manager is going to make a hiring
decision based on an e-mail resume, when they
can browse your social media?”
WRONG QUESTION!
• The resume does not decide “who gets hired”
• The resume decides “who gets interviewed”
• Very different questions!
• Actual hiring decision is based on many factors such
as – resume, background checks, social media and
– most important of all – your interview and likability
4. Classic Resume: Just a 6-10 second scan
Reviewer can scan 50 of these in 10 minutes
5. “Living Resume”
• It’s graphical – but not easy to read – a data dump!
• Can you imagine trying to scan 50 of these “living
resumes” in less than 10 minutes? Who do you call?
8. These graphical formats are too
slow to replace the classic resume
• UNLESS your job target is computer graphics. In that
case, “the medium is the message” and they might
work.
• GOOD NEWS! Graphics can supplement a resume –
especially on your LinkedIn profile, for example …
9. LinkedIn Profile
LinkedIN does not replace
your resume –
LinkedIn IS your resume
Basically the same content
as your classic resume – just
“old wine in new bottles”
10. Why do you need both?
Classic resume and LinkedIN profile
= Same content, different uses

11. What Do Future Resumes Look Like?
5~10 Years From Now
• Resumes and LinkedIN profiles are here to stay – in one
form or another.
• NEW: Your ONLINE REPUTATION (aka your “personal
brand”) will dominate your resume & LinkedIN.
• NEW: Employers might not need your resume – they’ll
already know all about you! They’ll have your info in their
proprietary databases.
• NEW: Start building your online reputation now, so
employers can see you out there in the cloud (databases).
• “DON’T CALL US – WE’LL CALL YOU!” (uhhh…maybe.)
12. In the Future, Your Online Personal
Brand (Reputation) = Your Resume
How do you build your reputation, aka your “brand”?
That’s the subject another video, but consider these:
• Acquire bonafide expertise in a niche, an area of
interest that you’re really passionate about.
• Make yourself visible: LinkedIn, videos, blog, portfolio
website, Kindle, social media, executive publicity ...
• A handful of my clients are already doing this. I’m
helping launch websites, video blogs, and so on. In a
few years, everybody will be jumping on this
bandwagon.
