2. Welcome from your chairman
Welcome to the March meeting. Spring will officially begin on March 20th, but the month seems to
have started wet and windy; lets all hope it quickly improves. The move to M.T.F.C. 1861 Suite is
progressing well and the staff are most welcoming.
When we considered the move, one attraction was the televisions placed all around the room. We
could play videos through the DVD player, but the manager of the venue planned to play notices
and speakers' photos or films directly from a PC. Now this has been installed, I hope that the
televisions will show what is on the large screen. We are perfecting the use of the system and, by
theApril meeting, it should be up and running.
The Quiz Night was a great success; thank you, Graham Headworth, for taking my place as I
could not be there. There is a full report on page 3 in the Newsletter, so enough said, apart from
my thanks to Ian and Pauline Boucher for their great effort in putting on a successful evening’s
entertainment. The Quiz Night raises funds for our U3Awhich helps to keep our subs down.
The next event for fund raising is the Coffee Morning on Friday May 20th. Tickets will be on sale
at the monthly meeting so please buy one as all monies help to keep our U3A financially healthy.
The book stall also raises funds all year for the same reason, so buy a couple of books, enjoy the
read, and help your U3A.
We are in the process of changing our IT procedures for the future. A new sub-committee has
been set up to ensure that there will be a smooth and easy changeover from one Web
Administrator or Picture Editor or Newsletter Editor to the next and we hope to have this in place
over the next few months with the help of David Ling, our web master.
I will finish by reminding you that any suggestions may be put in the suggestion box. If you have
any concerns please let your committee know. I hope you enjoy the meeting.

3. Words from the Editor
I was interested to read an article in the i newspaper the other day on U3A in the Education
section. Drawing on interviews with two members and the National Chairman, the writer praised
the organisation for alleviating the 'debilitating loneliness and isolation that is endemic among
older people in the UK' and for providing members with 'the array of new opportunities to learn'.
Interestingly, Pam Jones, the National Chairman, said, “We are not a welfare organisation, but
our modus operandi produces this added bonus.” I think we would all agree with the views
expressed.
As a passing thought, this article was in a newspaper, and all papers are going through a bad
time now, losing circulation year on year – up to 10% off per annum. Yet where could I read such
an article on the internet, or reflect on it a week later, sitting in an armchair? Newspapers must
be preserved to provide this type of thoughtful article.
Jill Pullan
It is with great pleasure that we have learnt that Jill
Pullan, of Mansfield, Ashfield and Rainworth U3As, has
been placed on the U3A Roll of Honour for her
exceptional efforts in helping with the development of
Rainworth U3A and her work with the other U3As.
Mansfield U3A Committee and members are delighted to
congratulate her on such a deserved honour. She joins
one of our founding members, Edith Senior, on the Roll.
The February Meeting
Those members who missed February's meeting missed
a treat. It is difficult to see how gravestones can be fun,
but, by scraping the moss off them and copying down the
epitaphs, Jean Townsend created an hour or more of
gentle humour.
She held the audience on her journey through England’s
churchyards as the human quirks found in the epitaphs
of the past were revealed. The message behind the talk
was that we should preserve and value our churchyards and cemeteries for their interest and not
allow the authorities to crush the humorous or spiky epitaph in favour of the bland message. Our
thanks to Jean for a most enjoyable morning.

Popular Music Appreciation
Peter Haynes would like to remind all members of the group that the annual lunch will be held on the
March 22nd meeting date at the Carnarvon Arms, Teversal. Please arrive at 12.30pm for 1pm.
Quiz Night
Once again, the annual Quiz Night was a resounding success, in fact, the room seemed fuller
and more noisy than usual. Of course, the whole idea of expecting us to remember trivia from
the past is completely ridiculous when half of us can’t remember what we had for breakfast!
The evening had just the right amount of barracking the question master, of argument between
team members as to who knew the most and of accusations of treachery and deceit between the
teams. As the evening wore on, the noise level rose in proportion to the lowering of wine and
beer, but sociability reigned supreme.
4. Naturally, the best team lost, leaving the
kudos to, once again, the team with 'TW'
on it. How many years now? I ask. But
who cares who won; it was enough that I
knew the quotation was from Twelfth
Night even if I knew nothing else; it was
enough that everyone had a good time.
For that, we could thank Pauline and Ian
Boucher for the set-up and the questions
(did they work it all out in New Zealand?);
Janet Whitlam and Sue Longden for the
(delicious) food; and Jean Hinds and Liz
Ellis for the raffle which raised £177. The
total net sum that went to Mansfield U3A
was £455 – and for that sum, thanks to those above, to all our members and to those from
Ashfield, Forest Town, Rainworth and Sherwood. What a night!

Theatre Visit to 'Blood Brothers' by Willy Russell
I missed Willy Russell’s Blood Brothers musical play when it first came out over 20 years ago, but I
managed to catch up with it on February 17th this year at the Theatre Royal.
It was an amazing production which charted the lives of twin brothers who were separated at birth; one
to remain in working-class Everton and one given to the childless factory owner’s wife. Grown men
playing the roles of children might be stretching a point, but they were wholly believable, down to riding
make-believe horses in Cowboys and Indians games and spitting competitions! Then followed the
initiation rite of piercing their thumbs to let their bloods mingle to become ‘Blood Brothers’.
But the comedy slowly turned to tragedy as they grew older. Throughout the play was the fear of the
middle class adoptive mother that her twin might become 'infected' by contact with his working class
brother. The discovery made by the twins that they really were brothers rapidly moved to tragedy as
both brothers were killed in an abortive robbery. The shock was felt throughout the audience and as I
surreptitiously wiped my eye, I could see that other U3Aers were doing the same.
A powerful cast in a gritty yet poignant play that was brilliantly staged. The audience stood to give the
cast four curtain calls.

Wine Group 3 Celebrates Ten Years
It was on the evening of Friday January 20th 2006, that a group of Mansfield U3Amembers assembled at
Ron & Carole Britton’s home in Kirkby-in-Ashfield for a meeting to discuss the formation of a new wine
appreciation group.
Ron Britton was already an experienced wine judge and had started and led Mansfield U3A wine groups
1 and 2. Group 1 had not been entirely successful and had closed; hence the exploratory January
meeting, where it was decided to go ahead with the new group 3, with Ron as group leader, and with a
format as used by the previous groups. Meetings were to be held on the third Tuesday of each month at
the homes of members in turn.
February 2006 saw our first tasting session
which involved four bottles of wine made
from the Merlot grape, each bottle from a
different country. All were duly sniffed,
swirled, sipped and swallowed, (no spitting it
out with our members) then given a score
out of thirty, and put in their place order of
first to fourth. The tasting over, the
remainder of the evening was taken up with
convivial conversation over supper supplied
by the hosts.
This has now happened every month with
few exceptions for the last ten years, and we
all love it just as much now as we did at that
first meeting. The group leader has changed
a couple of times but that is all. The people in the group now, were all at the first meeting, and we are now
old friends rather than wine tasting acquaintances. Whilst we wouldn’t claim to be connoisseurs, we have
all learned a great deal about the world of wine, especially that the most expensive bottle is not always the
one we like best.
10. To mark these ten years of good times, Lynne & Barrie Jackson entertained us to a wonderful four
course dinner at their home in Annesley on the Tuesday February 23rd, where wine was the main
theme, and the food chosen to match. We had a dry rose with starters, sweet whites from Portugal and
Australia with pudding, but the stars of the evening were two 13-year-old French reds, one from Paulliac,
the other from St. Julien.
It has been a wonderful ten years for us, and another small success for the U3A movement, which we
must thank for bringing us all together.
Graham Allin
There are now three wine groups in Mansfield U3A. Unfortunately, they are full as they meet in
members' houses. However, should any U3A members wish to set up a fourth group, we would
be delighted to help in any way possible (apart from contributing bottles of wine, of course). No
experience is necessary, just a liking for wine and good company!
Blazing Saddles in Blidworth
Down in the wilds of Blidworth Bottoms, at the Kirkfields Equestrian Centre, strange sights were to be
seen last Friday. Six ladies strode out of a room and swaggered across the concrete yard. Dressed in
various hues, but mostly black, stamping their boots on the ground and peering out from under their
helmets on the top of which was written the letter K for the benefit of the air ambulance, they made their
way to the indoor riding school.
There, they climbed gingerly up the riding
steps and, even more gingerly, clambered
onto an assortment of horses of different
sizes, shapes, colours and hairiness. These
all had one thing in common, a look of
disdain, as if to say ‘We were once noble
steeds but now are reduced to this’.
They ambled off on a walk round the shed,
stopping every so often to relieve
themselves on the sawdust in an
embarrassingly powerful display. The
horses, you understand, not the ladies.
At this point, your reporter departed the
scene, frozen but full of admiration for them
(the ladies, not the horses). Who would
have thought that ladies ‘of a certain age’
would take to riding so enthusiastically? Age
is no barrier, obviously, nor dodgy knees
and backs. No men could be seen – are they all so fearful or, perhaps, so sensible? Never mind, I'm
sure that Mansfield U3Ais the first to have such a group.
Let Christine Smith, the Group Leader, take up the tale:
The groups go on a Friday at 11.00am for 11.30; this gives time to complete the insurance forms. If
riders do not have their own hard hats and footwear, they can hire them at a cost of £1.00 each, and
these are checked to ensure they fit and are up to standard. There are two groups at the moment, the
Page 10 of 12
11. more experienced group go on the 4th Friday of the month; the other group, the beginners, will be going on
the 2nd Friday of each month, starting on March 11th.
Any new riders will be placed into the best group to best suit their needs, or a new group could be started on
one of the other Fridays and, if numbers increase, it could be extended to every Friday.
If you are interested, contact Christine Smith on 07859 249086 or see her at the monthly meeting.
The Luncheon Club
A group of 25 diners visited the Carnarvon Arms
in Teversal for February's lunch. Although the
service was a bit chaotic, everyone enjoyed
themselves and there were no complaints.
Three of our regulars have volunteered to
arrange the next lunches for us; our thanks to
them.
All details can be found on our webpage and we
look forward to seeing you all at our next venue,
The Hostess, for a carvery lunch

Holidays
Devon Holiday June 13th – 20th 2016.
Eight days at the Queen's Hotel, Paignton
Cost: £529 including an £18 variety show, but excursions optional.
All balances need to be paid at the March meeting. Cheques payable to Mansfield & District
U3A. However, twin or double rooms will be available until May when the four spare rooms being
held for us are released. This is really good value for money for an 8-day holiday in a 3*+ hotel
especially with a show included. Look up the facilities on the Internet!
But cancellations mean I may have to ask for the returned money back! My apologies.
Mallorca September 26th – October 3rd 2016 at the Fergus Pollensa Park Hotel.
At the moment, we have 48 passengers who have paid their deposits, which gives me two
free places. I hope to reduce this final balance without the worry!
The final balances will be published in the newsletter in April so that you can begin to pay
me in May. All balances must be paid no later than the June meeting. Cheques as usual
payable to Mansfield & District U3A.
Margaret Burlinson
Coffee Morning at The Towers in May
Tombola and raffle prizes would be more than welcome! Bring them to the monthly meeting inApril or
May to give to Sue Longden. As all profits go to keep your subscription low, please support the day.
Royal Revelry in June
Plans for the event on Tuesday June 7th are well advanced, but more help is always needed!
Do help us to make the day a right 'royal' success! It is hoped all ten neighbouring U3As will be
there with displays by their interest groups with both outdoor and indoor events taking place.
It is a free day but there will be a High Tea at the end of the afternoon at a cost of £8. Rita Turner will
talk about the day at the April meeting when tickets will be on sale. These will be limited to 25 per
U3A initially but there may be more on offer later if other U3As do not use their allocation.
