2. The Parable Of The Laborers Context
• In Matthew 20:1-16 we looked at Parable Of
The Laborers
3. The Parable Of The Laborers Context
• I believe that the context for the for "the last shall be first, and the
first last” (Matthew 20:16) , begins back in Matthew 19:16 where
the rich young ruler says "what good thing shall I do that I may gain
have eternal life?" He answers Jesus, that he has kept the law, then
Jesus says give up all that you have and come follow me (v.21).
Jesus is reinforcing this huge dispensational change that he
introduced in Matthew 11:11. When he told his disciples (v.23) that
it's "hard for a rich man to enter heaven", this was difficult for the
disciples because they equated good with prosperity. So they
responded with "who then can be saved?" (vs.27). In other words, if
the good people that God has blessed so much won't enter the
kingdom, who can possibly make it into heaven? Peter adds "we
have left all and followed you." Jesus replies with “you also shall sit
upon twelve thrones… the last, first” Matthew 19:28–30. This sets the
stage for the parable of the landowner. The whole parable is about
the fact that Israel who had started from the first hour and born the
heat of the day,

• for 1400 years, with the law and the prophets, the sacrifices that
they have made, will be rewarded, exactly as promised, but the
church age believers, who were hired at the very last hour, will rule
over as the 12 tribes of Israel. This is a reinforcement, and
expansion of, Matthew 11:11, and Luke 16:16. There we find out
that even the faithful Old Testament saints like Joseph, Daniel,
Zechariah, and Isaiah, all of the Old Testament saints will be less
than the one who is least in the kingdom of heaven (church age
saints). In fact, they will be judged by the disciples of Christ (v.28).
• So, Jesus then gives The Parable Of The Laborers (Matthew 20:1-
16), giving assurance to the disciples that God will give Israel exactly
what He has promised, He is just and will do right, but He is under
no obligation to extend the grace of the kingdom of heaven to
them. They will get exactly what they bargained for, an earthly land
blessing and the Millennial Kingdom.

23. Matthew 22:30, Age For Eternity
Good Morning Lord, Compass International , www.compass.org
• QUESTION FOR THE DAY, Dear Compass, I have often wondered: If we don't age in
heaven, do babies that have gone there always stay babies? And what age will we be? I
don't want to live to be 100 if that's what I'm going to look like for eternity!
ANSWER: The new body believers receive is different than the one we now have here
on earth. Although we will have all the knowledge accumulated on earth (Luke 16:28),
we will be different physically (Philippians 3:21). Our bodies also will be similar to
angels:
• . . . in the resurrection they neither marry, nor are given in marriage, but are like angels
in heaven. —Matthew 22:30 Being compared to angels is not too shabby.
• Angels are majestic in appearance, "awesome" (Judges 13:6).
• Angels have great wisdom: "know all that is in the earth" (2 Samuel 14:20) [DLK adds,
“the angel of God” (who is omniscient), is different than “an angel of God”+.
• Angels are "mighty in strength" (Psalm 103:20).
• But realize we are a higher order than the angels: ". . . we shall judge
angels" (1 Corinthians 6:3). But the most important parts of us, our spirit and soul,
have no mass. Our containers, therefore, are just not that important. But for a rough
idea in human terminology, we think the men will all be around age 21 and the women
age 18. (No, we don't have a verse for that!) :-)
