What a Staffing Firm does:
From the American Staffing Association :
Placement A staffing firm brings together job seekers and potential employers for the purpose of establishing a "permanent" employment relationship.
Temporary Help A staffing firm hires its own employees and assigns them to support or supplement a client's work force in situations involving employee absences, temporary skill shortages, seasonal workloads, and special projects.
Temporary to Hire A staffing firm employee works for a client during a trial period in which both the employee and the client consider establishing a "permanent" employment relationship.
Long-Term Staffing/Travel Staffing A staffing firm supplies employees to work on long-term assignments. Employees are recruited, screened, and assigned by the staffing firm.

Questions to ask the staffing firm:
What is your experience in this field?
Where are the majority of your assignments (location/setting)?
What are your minimum requirements for hours?
Do I have to sign a non-compete with your company?
Questions to ask the Staffing Firm:
Can I talk to a current employee as a reference?
Are my goals realistic with what your company can provide?
What is your scheduling process?
Selecting the Staffing Firm:
Select the one that:
Can provide the type of work you want
Can provide the consistency you need
Has consistent experience in the niche
Gives you realistic and honest feedback
Getting Started:
Once you’ve selected the staffing firm, you’ll need to complete their due diligence which includes:
Application
Interview
Background Check
License Check (Board of Pharmacy, OIG, EPLS)
Three References
Getting assignments:
Most staffing firms will have either a Staffing Specialist or Scheduler that will work with you
Update them on your availability regularly either by phone or electronically
Once a shift or assignment is set up, ALWAYS ask the Staffing Specialist for a confirmation with the hours, location, date, and pay (including any reimbursements or per diem)
How to get a GREAT reference on every assignment:
“ Start with the end in mind”
-from Stephen Covey’s, The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
How to get a GREAT reference on every assignment:
Be on time or early (every day)
Be prepared (know who to ask for and what you’re being asked to do)
Ask questions – especially when training and take notes if you need to
Be proactive – if you find yourself finished with a task or queue ask where else you can help
At the end of the first day, ask what you can do differently on the next scheduled day
Be better than your coworkers there – don’t just think because they aren’t doing something that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t
Final Thoughts
Working for a staffing firm can be very rewarding depending on where you are in your career
Listen to your Staffing Consultant and their feedback – they are there to help and advise you
