True to form, black and white still reign supreme as the building
blocks for the Anne Fontaine Fall Winter 2009 collection. A manifestation of this season’s theme
Black Pearl, the color palette is comprised not only of the obvious black, but shades of green,
violet, winelight, and grey, all distilled from Miles Davis’ album Aura. Similarly to how Miles
claimed that painting helped him create the music for the album, Anne explains, “Music inspires
me, fills me with energy, and lets me visualize the colors”.
Anne draws inspiration from the spirit of Jazz, a music that marks a dawn of shared passion
between all people. Endowed with symbols of eternal love, purity, wisdom, and the values of
tolerance and unity, Black Pearl is an homage Anne wished to present to the world following the
election of Barack Obama.
Playing on the collection’s Jazz theme, Anne has introduced a “Trumpet” and “Saxophone”
shoulder and sleeve design. Along with fitted silhouettes, Anne has multiplied and layered the
effects of soft and airy volumes. Jazz, followed through its numerous generations-Cool, Smooth,
Free, Modal, Fusion- perfectly reflect the Anne Fontaine woman and her various dreams and
colors. Anne created pieces offering freedom of expression and movement, representative of
the advancement of women’s rights and free jazz. The play of light and flowing materials like
printed or devoree silk muslin, one of the newcomers to this collection, are set to contrast with
heavier fabrics such as velvet, wool, and tweed.
Accessories include artfully crafted handbags, belts, and jewelry in the many shades of the
Black Pearl. Materials such as python and pony, Anne’s latest accessories exude an
edgy sophistication and luxury. Anne Fontaine’s signature rosette flower design and detail is
boldly eminent throughout.
