1. Final Presentation Script
Hello my name is Jonghyun Choe . Iām 17 years old, and this is my third year at ISB. Next year, I will be
going to University either in the United States or France and Iām considering studying Business and
Management as my major in the future.
What will you be talking about in this presentation?
In this presentation, I will talk about my personal experience/passion (Tennis) that has shaped me in a
way, and that reveals my personal trait and character in some way. I have been playing tennis since I
was in 7th grade in France, ever since I have always enjoyed playing this sports. By relating this
experience to the ways of knowing concepts that I have learned in senior seminar class this semester, I
will be analyzing what type of a learning person I am through connecting to the ways of knowing.
Why did you choose this example ?
I chose this topic not only because tennis is my favorite sports, but also because being a tennis player at
ISB was a challenging experience for me, where I encountered many different experiences such as
motivational problems, and confidence issues, that I thought would match well to the ways of knowing.
What significant experiences did you encounter being a tennis player at school?
I started being part of varsity tennis member my junior year, where there were 10 players in the boys
team. It was a harsh experience for me because while I was the 10th best player at school, I was also the
10th best player in the team. This was a factor that affected my āemotionā, which I will further talk about
later. Being a tennis player and participating in different tournaments and matches involved many
different factors such as motivation, self respect and confidence, co-operating with the team members
in order to bring about the most successful result as a team throughout the season.
What ways of knowing can be related to this specific learning experience you encountered?
First off, I want to introduce the four ways of knowing that I have learned throughout the senior seminar
class: Language, Perception, Reason and Emotion. Each of these ways of knowing has its own benefits
and drawbacks and they as a whole help us learning and observing the world in general, creating a
coherent and logical truth.
I think that my tennis experience fits into 3 of the ways of knowing mentioned. First emotion played the
largest role for me being part of the tennis team, because depending on the situation I was in each time,
the outcome differed when at times when my emotions were unstable. For instance when I played
matches, emotion would kick in almost every point I played, that either discouraged or encouraged me.
INITIALLY WE OFTEN THINK EMOTION IS WHAT DRIVES OUR PERFORMANCE BUT THE jl THOERY WE
USED IN CLASS MAKES IT CLEAR THAT THE PHYSIOLOGICAL RESPONSE COME S FIRST AND WE LABEL
THAT AS EMOTION. THIS ALLOWS ME TO SEARCH FOR THE STIMULI THAT CAUSED THE RESPONSE AND
2. THEN TRY TO MODIFY MY CONTEXT/ENVIRONMENT/CHOICESā¦(TALK ABOUT HOW) IN ORDER TO
IMPROVE. Emotion also affected my performance because being the 10th player in the team made me
become less motivated. I wasnāt the first pick when it came to tournaments where emotion played a
massive role and that initially made me think of myself as a ābadā tennis player. Emotion was a helpful
factor that helped me because I was able to perform at maximum level when my emotion stayed
positive and stable. BOTH THE POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE ASPECTS OF PERFOMANCE ARE EXPLAINED BYT
YERKES-DODSON LOWā¦.
CONNECTION WITH OTHER LIFE SITUATIONS => taking exams
JAMES LANGE THEORY = emotions are physical in nature body changes come before and cause
emotional changes. Body stiff, less dynamic, affecting the results
Yerkes Dodson = "law" asserts that performance increases with physiological or mental arousal, but only
up to a point. When levels of arousal become too high, performance decreases.
Next, reason was also a big part of the experience that helped me find who I really was as a tennis player
and as a person. For instance, although I was discouraged by the fact that I was not the first pick of
coaches and didnāt play much at tournaments, the fact that I was in the varsity team and that I had to
contribute to the community made me realize that my tennis career was not just about myself but for
the community I was in. Reasoning helped me come up with a more accurate result than emotion in
some way, because I could make decisions based on what was more coherent and logical rather than my
personal gut feelings+intuitions. I used both deductive and inductive
Inductive Reasoning
False dilemma = black and white => when weāre in difficult situations we become extreme and negative
Third, language was another ways of knowing that helped me realize and learn the problems I
confronted in the varsity tennis team. By communicating with coaches and team members constantly, I
was able to figure out the problems I had of myself. First my skills lacked compared to other players, but
I had positive attitude and willingness to keep doing better, which helped me gain a better knowledge of
myself as a tennis player and how to make a better contribution to the team.
What are the strengths and weaknesses of each of the WoK you used in order to ?
As mentioned earlier, emotion played an important role to me to encourage myself and keep me
motivated. Whenever I did not feel confident in myself, I could not win any matches and was not helping
the team as a whole because my teammates would get affected by my feelings. However, emotion at
times was inaccurate in my decision making, because emotion could lack the part where I could be more
logical and coherent in the decisions I made. For example, impulsiveness sometimes harmed my results
when I would put myself in risk. Keep motivating myself and telling myself that I was doing great, in fact
was not entirely true, because I clearly did not perform well sometimes.
3. Reasoning however was a more precise method to observe and learn about me, and gave me a clearer
perception of truth of who I really was as a tennis player. On the other hand, reasoning was difficult to
use at times because as I learned in class, people tend to be weak when they try to do abstract
reasoning which could result in misconception and making mistakes/errors. Reasoning was also
challenging because I came to different conclusions when I used different kinds of reasoning such as
making hasty generalizations, inductive reasoning and having false dilemma in myself as a tennis player
based on my performance.
Language proved to be an effective method to utilize because I was able to receive other individualās
opinions. For instance listening to coaches and captains was very helpful and reassuring because I
thought of them as experts, who would have greater knowledge and experiences in tennis than I did.
But, one drawback for this specific way of knowing was that the risk that these āexpertsā would use same
mistakes as I would make, because humans tend to make misconceptions based on different subjectivity
of truth. Confirmation bias
What does the example say about you as a person or a tennis player? Will you change the way you
approach when learning something in the future?
From my experience being in the varsity tennis team in the 2 previous years, I am confident to say that I
have effectively used several ways of knowing I learned in class by using emotion, reasoning and
language. By effectively balancing these ways of knowing pretty well, I was able to come up with an
accurate result of an idea of myself as a person and as a tennis player in my team that has made me
become more confident in myself. However it is true that at times, I forced myself to believe in what I
wanted to believe in (confirmation bias) because I did not want to accept my weaknesses. Through using
the ways of knowing method, I was able to come up with future expectations in myself, which I am
planning to do more in the future in order to set my goals more clearly to myself in order to
acknowledge what is right and wrong. Also I have learned that there is no absolute black and white
reality after learning the ways of knowing, which was one of the most significant self realization for me
so that I will have a more flexible ways of perceiving the world and not make me get stuck on one firm
view of the world like I used to have limiting my perception skills.
