Presentation on RDA experiment at FDU presented at VALE conference, Jan. 5, 2011.
Brigid Burke Technical Services and Digital Projects Librarian Fairleigh Dickinson University Presented at VALE conference, Jan. 5, 2011
Background on RDA Challenges presented by RDA Implementation strategy taken by FDU Madison
Resource Description and Access Replacement for AACR2 (Anglo-American Cataloging Rules) Published June 23, 2010 http://rdatoolkit.org Not a rewritten version of AACR2 Not designed for cataloging as we now know it
Written for the Semantic Web—not for MARC format (but is compatible with MARC) Moving from “closed” data structures to “open” ones not tied to format or records (From XML model to RDF model). Remove redundant data entry in cataloging tasks
FRBR Entities Work Expression Manifestation Item (Concept) (Object) FRAD Entities Person Family Corporate Body Place (Rules) (Agency)
Find Identify Select Obtain Understand (see RDA 0.4.2)
Attribute/value pair (as in XML, and MARC): Author=Twain, Mark Independent statements (RDF, Resource Description Framework) The author of Huckleberry Finn is Mark Twain, or Subject=Huckleberry Finn Predicate= hasAuthor Object=Mark Twain
RDA authorities are no longer about just differentiating names; now about completeness of names: 001 n 50009134 003 DLC 005 20101027131652.0 010: : |a n 50009134 035: : |a (OCoLC)oca00044656 040: : |a DLC |b eng |c DLC |d WlAbNL |d OCoLC |d DLC 100:1 : |a Evans, George Ewart 670: : |a His Ask the fellows who cut the hay, 1956. 670: : |a The new companion to the literature of Wales, 1998 |b (Evans, George Ewart (1909-1988), writer and oral historian) 700:14: |a Evans, George Ewart, |d 1909-1988

ISBD punctuation has been made optional Most abbreviations have been eliminated No more GMDs “ Relationship designators” added to persons/corporate bodies associated with the work e.g.– 100 1_ $a Twain, Mark, $d 1835-1910 $e author. Additional data about “content”, “media”, and “carrier” Linking fields for related works
“ ...there's a fundamental (and I think irreconcilable) difference between how AACR2 and RDA treat access points for works and expressions.” – Robert Maxwell (PCC-LIST e-mail) Problem of hybrid author/title strings: Alcinous, fl. 2nd cent . Didaskalikos. French (Louis) Alcinous, fl. 2nd cent . Didaskalikos. Greek (Whittaker) Red follows AACR2, Bold follows RDA
Concept, Object or Place rules—these have not been written yet. Only time subjects are affected are when the subjects are names of persons, corporate bodies, families, or places. Fictitious characters may now have name headings established for them.
New MARC fields for RDA: 336 (Content type) 337 (Media type) 338 (Carrier type) 380 (Form of work) 381 (Other distinguishing characteristics) 7XX $i –(relationship designation) All changes listed in OCLC Technical Bulletin 258 : http://www.oclc.org/us/en/support/documentation/worldcat/tb/258/default.htm
Fields 336-338 have controlled terminology developed in cooperation with ONIX Presumably...the idea is to make MARC data compatible with publisher data... ...and therefore allow us to import more data that we now re-enter for each record.

New RDA properties developed in cooperation with DCMI. Templates provided in the RDA Toolkit for download and use. Allows you to code your metadata with RDA properties and URIs. Provide some kind of standard for all library data, physical and digital (?)
RDA provides instruction for identifying “works” and “expressions” and cataloging their attributes. Current library ILSs not designed for this type of record structure.
MARC is not a good fit for RDA (Diane Hillmann). Still use MARC, and will continue for the foreseeable future. New RDA tags for MARC should aid in conversion to any new format. What about older records? New templates for any new formats should be developed for catalogers (Coyle, Hillmann)
Semantic Web does not yet exist How RDA would work is not demonstrable in a practical way Current RDA test only deals with existing format (i.e., MARC).
RDA test is a “live” test—bibliographic and authority records put into live OCLC file. Editing AACR2 authority records to include RDA forms. If RDA is accepted...will OCLC/LC “flip a switch” and make the 700s into 100s for all records? If they do...what does that mean to our authority files?
RDA has not been officially adopted...however... It is very likely that it WILL be adopted...but Also very likely it will be continually modified as it goes from theory to practice.
June 23, 2010—RDA Toolkit went live online. Sept. 1, 2010—free demonstration period of RDA ended. Oct.1, 2010—LC’s test of RDA with its 20 test partners from the PCC. Dec. 31, 2010—Test period ends. Jan. 1, 2011-May 31, 2011—Analysis of test. June 2011—LC makes decision on RDA.
Necessary to get beyond theory to hands-on experience. Controlled number of records and environment—will not affect other consortium sites. Professional development.
Only creating RDA records for new, original cataloging at FDU-Madison campus. Special collections records. Not yet adopting RDA authorities. Unable to experiment in Content DM without loading RDA schema. Don’t want to go too far until LC makes their official decision.
In Voyager: Updated tag tables for testers (i.e., myself) Maintain a copy of the older tag table. With our Authorities Vendor: No changes yet, as we have not adopted RDA authorities. However, vendors like LTI are giving the option of including RDA in profiles. With our Staff and Users: Notify all staff of in-house test, and show sample records. Solicit staff feedback.

Small number of records, so not a large impact. Reference librarians like the RDA records, as they contain more information they find useful when searching. No impact on catalog view, as many RDA fields are not indexed and all are hidden. Impact on user searching has not been measured.
Reviewing RDA Core elements and definitions. Creating cross-walks between currently used DC and MARC fields of the schema elements we anticipate using. Discussion with OCLC about importing XML version of schema into Content DM for use. Sets up metadata background for future digital projects and data mining.
