Diagnosis for Dehydration
The doctor may conduct a physical exam to diagnose dehydration. He

Treatments for Dehydration
The aim of the treatment for dehydration is to replace the lost fluids and
lost electrolytes. Determining the best approach for the treatment
depends on age, the severity of dehydration and its cause. The
treatment includes:
Use oral rehydration solution for those who have diarrhea, vomiting or
fever. These solutions contain water and salts in specific proportions to
replenish both fluids and electrolytes and are also designed for easier
digestion.
In an emergency situation where a pre- formulated solution is
unavailable, you can make your own oral rehydration solution by mixing
1/2 teaspoon salt, 6 level teaspoons of sugar and 1 liter (about 1 quart)
of safe drinking water.
Drinking more and more water can improve dehydration by diarrhea,
vomiting or fever in adults
For exercise- related dehydration, cool water is the best bet. Sports
drinks containing electrolytes and a carbohydrate solution also may be
helpful.
In case of severe dehydration, the patient should be treated by
emergency personnel arriving in an ambulance or in a hospital
emergency room, where they can receive salts and fluids through a vein

body with water and essential nutrients much more quickly than oral
solutions do.

Complications in Dehydration
Dehydration can result in to some serious complications which include:
• Heat injury ranging in severity from mild heat cramps to heat
exhaustion to potentially life threatening heatstroke
• Swelling and rupture of the brain (cerebral edema)
• Seiz ures: Dehydration can lead to involuntary muscle contractions and
sometimes to a loss of consciousness.
• Low blood volume shock (hypovolemic shock)
• Kidney failure
• It can lead to coma and death if not treated appropriately.
