After serving one year as SCAD's Volunteer Coordinator for the college's volunteer program, it was time to hand-off my duties to someone new. The new coordinator was not familiar with sustainability but passionate about volunteering. I put this guide together so that they, and subsequent coordinators, would have a better understanding of the purpose of SCAD's sustainability volunteer initiatives and the process involved with coordinating them.

2. Mission
SERVE exists to educate and foster life-learning and social responsibility and to
provide students with a chance to serve the Savannah community through volunteer
and paid positions. The office promotes community service and service learning as a
link between the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Savannah community
while enhancing the existing curriculum through positions that allow students to
develop skills in work-based outlets.
History
SERVE (previously Service Opportunities for Students) has been SCAD’s source for
community service for almost fifteen years. In the past, students expressed a need for
outreach programs and SCAD has supported the need.Today SERVE offers numerous
volunteer programs including Alternative Spring Break, H.E.Art, Habitat for
Humanity, Kids Cafe, Pet Project, Special Events, and Sustainability.
Programs
SERVE is the Savannah College of Art and Design’s student-led community service
office. It is comprised of eight service coordinators, who each facilitate specific
programs. Coordinators gain experience in networking, recruiting, project-planning,
decision-making, promotion, and delegating responsibilities. SERVE provides
students with the opportunity to serve Savannah community through contacts with
local agencies and schools. The needs of the community dictate the service provided.

3. Definition
Sustainability is broadly defined as meeting the needs of the present without
compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. It is based
on a triple bottom line framework that puts ecological, environmental and social
success and well-being all equally important. Check out these videos for illustrated
explanations:

Program Description
The SCAD Serve Sustainability program offers students, staff and faculty the
opportunity to volunteer for various events and projects on campus and around
Savannah that explore sustainable initiatives contributing to a happy, healthy and
comfortable community for everyone.
We’re thinking seven generations ahead by taking creative action to volunteer with
organizations that help us meet the needs of the present without compromising the
ability of future generations to meet their own needs. We volunteer with
environmental and social organizations and have participated in cleaning up Tybee
beach, planting trees around town, and helping out at the farmers’ market just to
name a few.We are excited about volunteering in upcoming events this year that
promote healthy eating and living, green transportation, recycling and upcycling
materials, and more while engaging, inspiring and connecting with the Savannah
community. These volunteer opportunities will also be open to members of the
Savannah community, so it’s a great chance to get to mingle with the sustainability
movers and shakers of our hostess city.

So many things going on in our community have sustainability initiatives, and are
great to introduce students to, and help support. Sustainability is all about social
equity: How can we help everyone have a fair and just life?, and environmental
stewardship: How can we help nature stay healthy and happy? There are so many
organizations are working towards doing something along those lines that are
helping to make Savannah a happy and healthy place for all creatures to live.
