2. Where and When
Is This the Right Residency for You?
is a two, three or four week stay in
a log cabin in the woods near East Jordan, Michigan. It includes
a well-stocked kitchen, some music equipment, a writing desk
and a printer.
Unlike most residencies, the Hill House is a secluded space
supporting just one artist or collaborative group at a time. You
should be prepared to focus on your art in an isolated space. Is
this the kind of experience that will help you relax and focus, or
will sleeping alone in a cabin in the woods drive you crazy?
There are two application periods each year. First decide which
dates you are available to attend. The more flexible your availability,
the greater the chances your application will be accepted.
There are hundreds of residency programs out there—be sure
this is the right one for you.

Accommodations
the hill house is a rustic log cabin near East Jordan,
Michigan, located about an hour northeast of Traverse City. It
has two bedrooms, a sleeper couch, two bathrooms, a washer
and dryer, electric heat, a fireplace, and easy access to hiking
trails and great canoeing. The Hill House can accommodate a
maximum of four people at one time. Smoking is not permitted
on the property. One dog or cat is allowed, but must be leashed
when outdoors.
We stock the kitchen with great food and make every effort to
fulfill your dietary desires. We focus on fresh, local, seasonal and
organic food whenever possible, including local pastured meat
and poultry. We also support vegetarians and vegans. Residents
prepare their own meals.
Community Engagement
Community engagement is possible, but can be challenging,
and is not a required part of your residency. Some artists enjoy
hosting an informal potluck/discussion/performance, and some
just like to meet with ISLAND staff and friends at the local pub.
We can also help organize something more formal if you desire.
Applying
Residency awards are based primarily on the artistic merit
of your submitted material. Applications are assessed using a
jury process, with a different jury for each application period.
Detailed information about the program and a link to the
application are available at the island website:
