Passport to Rutgers Hillel
A Jewish Campus Life
What is Hillel?
Hillel provides hundreds of
free Shabbat dinners weekly...
But we’re not a caterer.
Hillel has taken over 1,500
students to Israel...But we’re
not a travel agent.
Hillel educates students about
Jewish texts, history and
values...But we’re not a day
school or yeshiva.
These are all important, but
Hillel aspires to goals that far
outstrip the services we may
provide for our students at
any given moment in time.
Hillel’s aspiration is to change
the entire world for the better,
through the inspired actions
of the Jewish People.
We invite you to join in
this holy work.
Dear Friends and Alumni,
Rutgers Hillel is in the midst of the most exciting and rewarding period in our history.
• We embarked on an $20 million capital and endowment fundraising campaign.
• Construction of the magnificent Eva and Arie Halpern Hillel House is well on its way,
looking toward completion in the spring of 2016.
• Rutgers undergraduate Jewish student population is the largest in the country.
• Rutgers Hillel was named the “2014-2015 Outstanding Large Student Organization”
by the Office of Student Life.
Despite the complexities of conducting Hillel activities from two separate temporary
locations this year, Hillel programs, learning opportunities, Israel events, Shabbat and
Holiday observances remain rich and diverse. All underscoring our motto: Rutgers is a
Great Place to be Jewish!
Now, with this Passport to Rutgers Hillel, we are once again number one with publication
of the first catalogue of Hillel giving opportunities in the university world. Passport to
Rutgers Hillel provides you with a kaleidoscope of giving opportunities that represent the
essence of Jewish campus life at Rutgers Hillel.
I hope you enjoy reading through the catalogue. Most importantly, I hope you
find giving opportunities that match your particular interests, understanding that when it
comes to Jewish Community, Rutgers Hillel is the most important organization in our state.

Executive Director

The Heart of Jewish Life at Rutgers
Rutgers Hillel’s new facility, under construction at Rutgers University–New
Brunswick, will be home to the nation’s largest undergraduate Jewish population.
fter more than seven decades without a permanent location, Rutgers Hillel is
coming home. The Eva and Arie Halpern Hillel House, now under construction at
70 College Avenue, will be a world-class facility and the center of Jewish student
life at Rutgers University–New Brunswick. The building is scheduled to open in spring
2016; Hillel is now housed at 9 Bartlett Street.
The 33,000-square-foot facility—with stunning architectural features and a glass and
stone façade—will include a sweeping front porch, a kosher dining hall, the Center for
Israel Engagement, an outdoor pavilion, and a rooftop Holocaust Memorial Garden. The
lobby will feature a Legacy Wall dedicated to Rabbi Julius Funk, Rutgers Hillel’s first
executive director, and his wife, Pearl.
The new Hillel House is named for philanthropists Arie Halpern and his wife, Eva
Stein Halpern, to commemorate their lifelong dedication to Jewish education, causes
and people. The couple’s children donated $3 million to the Rutgers Hillel Capital and
Endowment Campaign in their parents’ memory. To date, the campaign has raised 80
percent of its $18 million goal.
Scarlet pride is strong in the Halpern family; two of the Halperns’ grandchildren are
Rutgers graduates; Allan Schall RC’97 and Gonen Paradis RC’02.
Rutgers Hillel is part of Hillel, the Foundation for Jewish Campus Life, the largest Jewish
campus organization in the world. With more than 6,000 Jewish students, Rutgers–New
Brunswick has the largest undergraduate Jewish student body in the nation.

FOR THE STAR-LEDGER
Rutgers Has Most
Jewish Students
In United States
Rutgers University’s New
Brunswick campus has more
Jewish students than any other
public college in America, ac-
cording to new rankings by a
Jewish campus life foundation.
Rutgers, with about 6,400 Jew-
ish students, is atop Hillel In-
ternational’s list of the 60 most
popular public schools for Jewish
students. The University of Cen-
tral Florida is second with 6,000.
No other New Jersey schools
made the list of public schools,
which is published in the Hillel
College Guide. Princeton Uni-
versity, with 600 Jewish under-
graduate students, finished 39th
among private schools.
The lists were generated from
data that is self reported by the
schools, according to Hillel Inter-
national.
Felicia McGinty, Rutgers’ vice
chancellor for student affairs,
said she didn’t know Rutgers led
the country’s public schools in
tudents until the rank-
place, a university community,
where everyone feels valued and
accepted.”
About 19 percent of undergrad-
uates at Rutgers are Jewish, ac-
cording to the rankings.
The university has both a major
and minor in Jewish studies, ko-
sher dining options and a chabad
house on College Avenue. A new
Hillel building is under construc-
tion as well.
Rutgers also sponsors a study
abroad program in Israel, accord-
ing to the Hillel College Guide.
The school does not specifically
recruit Jewish students, McGinty
said.
“I think it’s just reputation —
that we have had a history of
having strong relationships with
the Jewish community,” she said.

  • 1. Passport to Rutgers Hillel A Jewish Campus Life
  • 2. What is Hillel? Hillel provides hundreds of free Shabbat dinners weekly... But we’re not a caterer. Hillel has taken over 1,500 students to Israel...But we’re not a travel agent. Hillel educates students about Jewish texts, history and values...But we’re not a day school or yeshiva. These are all important, but Hillel aspires to goals that far outstrip the services we may provide for our students at any given moment in time. Hillel’s aspiration is to change the entire world for the better, through the inspired actions of the Jewish People. We invite you to join in this holy work. Dear Friends and Alumni, Rutgers Hillel is in the midst of the most exciting and rewarding period in our history. • We embarked on an $20 million capital and endowment fundraising campaign. • Construction of the magnificent Eva and Arie Halpern Hillel House is well on its way, looking toward completion in the spring of 2016. • Rutgers undergraduate Jewish student population is the largest in the country. • Rutgers Hillel was named the “2014-2015 Outstanding Large Student Organization” by the Office of Student Life. Despite the complexities of conducting Hillel activities from two separate temporary locations this year, Hillel programs, learning opportunities, Israel events, Shabbat and Holiday observances remain rich and diverse. All underscoring our motto: Rutgers is a Great Place to be Jewish! Now, with this Passport to Rutgers Hillel, we are once again number one with publication of the first catalogue of Hillel giving opportunities in the university world. Passport to Rutgers Hillel provides you with a kaleidoscope of giving opportunities that represent the essence of Jewish campus life at Rutgers Hillel. I hope you enjoy reading through the catalogue. Most importantly, I hope you find giving opportunities that match your particular interests, understanding that when it comes to Jewish Community, Rutgers Hillel is the most important organization in our state. Andrew Getraer Executive Director

  • 28. PO Box 11362 New Brunswick NJ 08906 JULY 8, 2015 By Adam Clark FOR THE STAR-LEDGER Rutgers Has Most Jewish Students In United States Rutgers University’s New Brunswick campus has more Jewish students than any other public college in America, ac- cording to new rankings by a Jewish campus life foundation. Rutgers, with about 6,400 Jew- ish students, is atop Hillel In- ternational’s list of the 60 most popular public schools for Jewish students. The University of Cen- tral Florida is second with 6,000. No other New Jersey schools made the list of public schools, which is published in the Hillel College Guide. Princeton Uni- versity, with 600 Jewish under- graduate students, finished 39th among private schools. The lists were generated from data that is self reported by the schools, according to Hillel Inter- national. Felicia McGinty, Rutgers’ vice chancellor for student affairs, said she didn’t know Rutgers led the country’s public schools in tudents until the rank- place, a university community, where everyone feels valued and accepted.” About 19 percent of undergrad- uates at Rutgers are Jewish, ac- cording to the rankings. The university has both a major and minor in Jewish studies, ko- sher dining options and a chabad house on College Avenue. A new Hillel building is under construc- tion as well. Rutgers also sponsors a study abroad program in Israel, accord- ing to the Hillel College Guide. The school does not specifically recruit Jewish students, McGinty said. “I think it’s just reputation — that we have had a history of having strong relationships with the Jewish community,” she said.
