Andy Lopata 2008 USING LINKED IN GET YOUR PROFILE RIGHT Whether people find you through LinkedIn, or you reach out to them, first impressions make a huge difference. Spend some time on your profile, much as you would with your CV. Ask yourself how others will perceive you when they read it, and how driven they will be to explore further or connect with you. Make it comprehensive but relevant. Always keep it up to date, including the status updates. These provide you with an opportunity to tell others what you do.

Andy Lopata 2008 USING LINKED IN THE POWER OF ENDORSEMENT It’s one thing for you to say how good you are, something else entirely when others do so. Connect with people on LinkedIn who know how good you are at your job, where your strengths lie and the qualities you bring to a company or to a client. Approach them and ask them for endorsements. Make sure they are relevant and make a difference, a testimonial saying how nice you are will have little impact. LinkedIn allows you to ask for endorsements to be amended before published. Don’t be afraid to use this if necessary.

Andy Lopata 2008 USING LINKED IN CONNECTING THROUGH CONNECTIONS LinkedIn is based on the theory of six degrees of separation, that we are no more than six steps from anyone in the World. LinkedIn shows you how you can connect to people up to three steps from you. Whether searching your contacts’ networks to find key connections, or searching for people by company or by name, you can use LinkedIn to connect with the people you need to reach. Build your network on LinkedIn as this will help you reach out to more people. Restricting your network to people you trust and who trust you makes LinkedIn introductions far more powerful.

Andy Lopata 2008 USING LINKED IN QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS You can use the Q & A functionality on LinkedIn to raise your profile and reach out to others. Ask questions that are relevant to your field of expertise or your market and answer similar questions posed by others. You can ask the question of your own network and it can also be viewed by the wider community. People nominate the best responses to their own questions, giving you the chance of greater visibility by using this proactively.
