6. EXTREME SPORTS
Extreme sports are activities, which has high level of risk and danger. These sports are usually
related to speed, height, adrenaline, amazing stunts or even death.
People practise these sports train a lot to be able to not get injured. Also to practise most of
extreme sports are needed specialized gear.
This term first appear on 1950s. Ernest Hemingway said once: "There are only three sports:
bullfighting, motor racing, and mountaineering; all the rest are merely games."
The first sports as extreme sports, are skateboard, based on roller skate from 18th century and
ski, this one is really old, the it first appear on a painting on primitive carvings in Norway, from
5000 B.C..
Nowadays, some extreme sports, have become Olympic trials. This is the case of Ski,
snowboard, mountain bike and lately BMX, there is not any other extreme sport which had
been Olympic before.
Extreme sports such as bike downhill are driven on the mountain hills, as ski, snowboard or
climbing, others as surf, windsurf, kite surf or sailing are practised on the sea, or also on rivers.
But other extreme sports, I consider more dangerous, begin their travel on the air or space.
Some of the most extreme sports are water extreme sports, personally, these are the ones I
most like, I have practised some of them, and they are exciting, especially in summer. I have
been sailing just the whole year, but last year's summer, I tried wakeboard, and it is amazing.
Previously I had tried skating and surfing but wake is awesome. You go pulled by a boat, and
your feet are hooked on a board. What I most like was that I could do extreme stunts. Firstly, I
could leave from the water as I had to keep my balance, but then it was easy. Everything was
going well until I fell on the cold water. Now I am excited so this summer I'm going to do
wakeboard again.
Mountain extreme sports are done at the hill. We can also practise beautiful extreme sports as
kayak(down the river), snowboard and skiing. On summer holidays, I usually take my bike with
me and I meet with my friend to go over a mountain or to make some routes.
Air and Space extreme sports. Well, not everybody is able to make this matter, I think
professionals practise this really extreme sports have born to fly, this is the case of Felix
Baumgartner. This man made the highest base jump, from the space. He flied for 120.000 ft..
and reached speeds of 580 km/h. He is already working on a new project, we'll see.
To finish, I think it´s not safe to practise extreme sports without having learned something
about them, or without anybody to show you how to do it. Then if you knew the method, you
would be able to practise it, but there are still extreme and consequently dangerous, in the
past I have practised some of them, and if you fall from the main thing, or you have an
accident, you will probably hurt yourself, so be careful!
