Simply put, the sound of an alarm clock going off on Monday morning is
more upsetting for night owls than early birds.
But your preference likely has its roots in biology. Your internal clock is located in the brain,
creating each individuals sleep mechanisms and the times of day when they feel most alert.
No matter what your preference, there are a few simply tricks you can do to make your evenings
more alert, or your mornings less irritable.
For early risers:
Ease up on t he alcohol. Alcohol is a depressant. It makes you tired and
compromises the quality of your sleep. Some studies have shown that
men who drank before sleeping lost as much as half an hour of sleep a
night-which is a big deal if you can only catch six hours, as sleep deprivation
actually costs you IQ points the next day! The men in the study also woke
up twice as often as those who didn’t drink.
Have one beer instead of five, and drink water, seltzer or juice until about 3
hours before you go to sleep. Your body will then be able to metabolize the booze, allowing you
to sleep well.
Also, morning people tend to secrete melatonin, the sleep hormone, earlier than evening people. It
might be helpful to keep a productivity log in order to see when you are most productive. You
might realize you need t o t ake a break-or a nap-at 3pm in order t o boost your product ivit y.
Especially if you rise at 5 am or before!
If you can’t or don’t like to nap, work out , or go f or a brisk walk. You’ll be surprised how many of
your co-workers would be happy to take meetings outside. It’s a great way to brainstorm and
shake off tension, and healthier than dozing around a table too.
Think of it as a re-boot!
Advice f or Night Owls
Make your mornings less painf ul by f illing t hem wit h rewarding act ivit ies-t he t hings you
act ually like doing. Exercise, creative tasks, and family time are all great early-in-the-day
activities. Try making breakfast with your kids, or going for a jog somewhere you find relaxing.
Exposure t o t he sun can help your body wake up earlier, t oo. Throw open the windows, buy a
2. sun lamp-or just go outside!
Be prepared. After all, you know you’re likely to wake up tomorrow. Get ready for your mornings
in the evenings, when your energy is naturally high. Set your coffee pot to brew, plan your clothes,
and gather anything you need to bring with you for your day. Make a to do list, and automate as
much as possible. The less you have to remember in the morning, the better.
