  • Enhancement Program
    • Federal SAFETEA-LU (Safe, Accountable, Flexible, Efficient, Transportation Equity Act: A Legacy for Users) Transportation Enhancement Program administered by VDOT
    • Intended to improve non-motorized transportation, enhance the public’s traveling experience, revitalize communities and improve quality of life
    • Project must:
      • Have a relationship to surface transportation
      • Be ADA accessible and meet ADA guidelines
      • Comply with AASHTO standards
      • Be open and available to the public

    • Plantation Road (Rt 115) from
    • Interstate 81 to
    • Williamson Road (US Rt 11)
      • Largest employment base in the County (4,000+ jobs)
      • 400 hotel rooms with two new hotels planned
      • Numerous commercial development opportunities (new and redevelopment)
      • Interstate access
      • Close to Hollins University (the only four-year university in the County)

    • Initiating 4 of 17 strategies :
    • Construct and install streetscape improvements (sidewalks, lighting, landscaping, signage, street furniture, etc.) throughout the study area
    • Incorporate bicycle lanes along Williamson Road and Plantation Road where feasible
    • Expand transit opportunities to the study area when and where feasible
    • Improve the pedestrian crosswalks at Plantation Road and Williamson Road
