Review: Like Hillsong and Bethel Music? You'll like
Vineyard's 'Spirit Burn'
Vineyard Records UK brought together 17 musicians from across the UK and Ireland to record a
live album at a packed-out church in London. This recording also saw the outstanding
collaborative effort in production from Casey Corum (Vineyard Worship USA) and Jimmy Cooke
(Vineyard Records UK). The result of this gathering and collaborative venture is "Spirit Burn
(Live from London)."
On this two disc album, the male and female vocalists share the responsibility of lifting their
voices in worship and reverence to God.
The first track on this album is a startling rendition of "O My Soul" which appeared on Samuel
Lane's album "The Fire."
It is little wonder that the song is on this album since Lane is one of the lead worship leaders at
Vineyard. "O My Soul" is performed by a female vocalist who has a voice I would describe as a
mixture of Tracy Chapman and Darlene Zschech.
"Spirit Burn" the album title track calls on the Holy Spirit to come down on the church while
rendering adoration to God. This performance tingles with loopy guitar cords, a subtle baseline
and steady drum roll.
On "Your Joy," the performers advocate for endless joy and worship despite what the world
throws at you. "I won't keep from singing...your joy is on me, your spirit is all around." While it
isn't super impressive, I like how they broke down the song and introduced the electric guitar.

"Emmanuel" is one of the best songs on this album. It is a mid-tempo song with profound guitar
strings. It boasts a vibe I would describe as a modernized hymn. The rhythm, tempo and melody
of the song are simplistic and beautiful. It is a perfect all-season song.
"My Soul Find Rest" tilts the album in an impressive way. The song sees the use of piano as the
key instrument as the female vocalist leads the worship number. The tune explores where our
dependency as Christians lie -- in God who as the psalmist states is our rock, refuge, hope,
strength and salvation.
"The Light"makes me hit repeat every single time. It is a soulful number following the same
theme as "My Soul Finds Rest."The way it "feels" is distinct and brilliant.
The second disc of the project commences with lively rendition of the Kevin
Prosch classic, "Show Your Power."
"Holy One" features lead vocals from both the led male and female vocalists on the project.
They join voices to lift God's name in praise. I most especially love the harmonization on this
number by both singers. Vineyard gives an opening invitation to the Holy Spirit in "Spirit Rest
On Me". "Come Holy Spirit... Let your spirit rest on me" the lead soloist croons. I like the awe
displayed lyrically in "Captivated" by Vineyard.
The raw strings filter through "Endless Grace" as the vocalist attempt to describe God's endless
grace and mercy. "Your Love Takes Hold" brings a Spirit-filled end to the album. I couldn't help
but slow dance to this one and sing along with the "la la la la la."
"Spirit Burn" is a music project that was birthed from a wonderful session of worship. It is
reminiscent of classic Hillsong or Bethel Music. It will go a long way into bringing people into a
worship oriented atmosphere no matter where they are.
