Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society 06/25/10 Mission Statement This plan, which reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa, serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter and for earning local, regional, and international recognition. In this plan, chapters do not compete against one another. Participation encourages excellence and recognizes progress in the attainment of goals set by the chapter. Five Star: Reflects the scholarly ideals of Phi Theta Kappa. It is the business plan for your chapter and serves as a blueprint for developing a strong chapter and for earning local, regional, and international recognition. Using the Five Star Chapter Development Plan as a guide to success, chapters can enhance their working relationship with the college administration by becoming active on the campus and in the community. On a personal level, involvement in the program will educate chapter members in the importance of deadlines and organizational skills. These skills will be critical as members complete their education and serve as community leaders.

Set Membership Recruitment Goal: Your chapter sets a goal for membership recruitment and develops strategies to meet this goal. For membership recruitment resources, visit www.ptk.org /campaign . Gain Visibility on Campus: Your chapter gains greater public awareness on campus by one or more of the following strategies: Distributing Faculty Awareness Flyers. www.ptk.org/campaign/ Posting Membership Benefits Brochures and/or Posters around campus Participating in “Phi Theta Kappa Founders Day” in November Sending a press release on new inductees. Open Enrollment Period in PAM: At the beginning of each membership recruitment campaign, the chapter advisor opens a new enrollment period in PAM, the Personal Assistant Manager for Advisors at www.ptk.org /PAM , and designates plans for orientations, inductions and local membership fees.

Conduct Prospective Member Orientations: Your chapter conducts an informational meeting for prospective members prior to induction. An Eligible Student Orientation PowerPoint Presentation, Key Advantage Slide Show and Member Testimonials are available on the web at www.ptk.org/campaign. Promote Membership Acceptance: Your chapter promotes membership acceptance by employing one or more of the following strategies: Calling eligible students Sending them a reminder email with link to Phi Theta Kappa Member Benefits Brochure. You are not required to revise or re-submit your bylaws on a yearly basis. You can check your chapter’s records online at www.ptk.org/directories/chapter_directory. Update Form: Chapter submits Five Star Chapter Update Forms online throughout the year; Final update must be received no later than December 31.

These meetings can be one officer meeting and one general meeting or two general chapter meetings. During these meetings chapter business and items of interest from Phi Theta Kappa’s electronic communications, website, and publications should be discussed. Conduct Two Membership Campaigns: Chapter conducts at least two membership recruitment campaigns during the year and opens a separate enrollment period in PAM at the beginning of each membership recruitment campaign. Members’ names and fees are promptly submitted to Headquarters. Review Honors Program Guide – featuring current Honors Study Topic; copies sent to advisors and chapter presidents. Map out Project Leadership Roles : Map out the specific leadership roles and actions the project requires. Also determine leadership development opportunities that would benefit the participants. Determine the Expert Resources for Your Project: Determine the expert resources (individuals and/or organizations, businesses, etc.) for the chapter to coordinate with for the greatest impact.

Examples include keeping an Honors in Action journal, maintaining a notebook of chapter meeting minutes and/or newsletters, saving copies of Hallmark Awards entries, etc. Implement College Project : Chapter implements a College Project which is determined by the chapter and college president or other administrator. FACULTY APPRECIATION -Plan an appreciation tea, an awards ceremony or a special banquet to say thanks for the dedication and hard work of faculty and staff members throughout the year. REGISTRATION SUCCESS - Offer to assist your college wherever needed during Registration each academic term COLLEGE AMBASSADOR - Serve as ambassadors for the college who may visit local high school “College Days” to personally endorse the community college as a viable educational choice. These members also serve as tour guides for potential students, parents, alumni and donors visiting the campus. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE - Help your college reach its goal of becoming earth-friendly by creating and operating a campus recycling program. Others: CHEAP LABOR - If budget cuts are a reality on your campus, offer to assist your college administration by performing office duties free of charge for faculty and staff that were effected by the cuts.

Assume A Leadership Role In The Region : Chapter is involved at a regional level in at least one of the following ways: Campaigns for regional office Hosts/assumes a leadership role at a regional meeting Participates in a Regional Honors in Action project Collaborates with at least two other chapters for an activity or event that is conducted online or in person Share your HIA Research: Chapter shares their HiA research with the campus or community (e.g., hosts an event that includes a formal presentation, writes an article for a publication, creates a display in the library or other resource center, etc.) Enter at Least One Hallmark Awards Category : Chapter enters at least one category in their regional awards program.
