This presentation focuses on arterial performance measures, reviewing two successful case studies: - KAI’s validation of Bluetooth MAC readers and their measurement of signal timing changes using MAC readers along Tualatin-Sherwood Road - Purdue University’s research, led by Dr. Darcy Bullock to field measure quality of signal timing offsets and vehicle arrivals on green versus red using local controller software - Peter Koonce provided an overview of arterial performance within the City of Portland and a regional vision for next steps, particularly focused on multi-modal and emergency management applications of the arterial data currently collected and to be collected in the future.

35 ways to find your location. GPS has not proved to be the panacea for finding your location. Urban canyons, price, speed, power, reliability, differing datums, and even the trustfulness of the data all contribute to a high-tech system that will not satisfy many situations when you really, really want to know your location. This talk will explore many different ways to find a location, from using the latest technologies to low-tech hacks. These often work best when used together, to refine the accuracy or usefulness of the location data. Measures for evaluating the different techniques will be shown, matching user needs for different scenarios to data collection types. Contexts and constraints, such as screen size and input mechanisms, will be introduced, and their effect on the various locative methods shown. In addition to HCI issues, computers and humans require very different information to understand their locations and orient themselves. This talk will give an introduction into how people convert data into locations into psychogeography -- places, mental maps, and invisible cities.

This paper describes the development of optimized model for urban outdoor coverage in Long Term Evolution (LTE) network at 2300 MHz frequency band in Port Harcourt urban region, Nigeria. Signal attenuation and fluctuation remain amongst the major channel impairments for mobile radio communication systems. This arises as a result of model incompatibility with terrain and Line of Sight (LOS) obstruction of the channel signals. Some path loss models such as OkumuraHata, COST 231, Ericsson 999, Egli and ECC-33 models were evaluated for suitability and compared with the modified model for the environments. The models were based on data collected from LTE base stations at three geographical locations in Port Harcourt namely- Rumuokoro, Eneka and Ikwerre roads respectively. The simulation was implemented using MATLAB R2014a software. The modified model was further optimized with some selected parameters such as Root Mean Square Error (RMSE) and Mean Absolute Error (MAE) using Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) technique. The results obtained gave rise to 3.030dB for RMSE and 0.00162dB for MAE respectively. The results obtained from the PSO optimized model demonstrated a better performance which is suitable for cell coverage planning and smooth handoff processes.

Pathloss is a key element that causes signal deterioration in the channel as the signal power reduces inversely with propagation distance, this deterioration experienced by the channel is majorly as a result of reflection, absorption, and scattering of the signal. This study however takes into consideration the radio path loss for precise base station (BS), frequency, and power adjustment prediction evaluated over a frequency of 2.3 GHz. With a distance range between 0.1 and 1.5 km for collection of data on the measured received signal strength (MRSS), five empirical models and a modified model were used to validate the measured data to determine their suitability for pathloss prediction at Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO), Imo state, Nigeria. The results shows that the root mean square error (RMSE) for the Okumura-Hata, COST 231-Hata, Ericsson model, Lee, Stanford University Interim (SUI), ECC-33, and modified models are 14.33, 9.73, 25.79, 48.4, 33.76, and 8.31 dB respectively. Additionally, the Ericsson model provided 0.498 dB, the COST 231-Hata recorded 0.733 dB, and the modified model provided 0.453 dB for mean absolute percentage error (MAPE). Therefore, the improved model produces the best results, consequently, be deployed to approximately predict path loss for mobile radio coverage in Owerri, Nigeria.

M3 Midstream and Photo Science recently selected and optimized a 25-mile NGL pipeline route in the Utica using the suitability grid analysis methodology. The routing methodology analyzes and combines multiple grids from three major perspectives: the natural environment, built environment, and engineered environment. It uses Esri ArcGIS technology to map all geographic features, assign stakeholder-generated suitability values, generate corridor alternatives using computer algorithms and create reports summarizing criteria used and values assigned. The Methodology has proved to be objective, consistent and defensible. This presentation will give an overview of this routing methodology. This presentation will discuss the need for a standardized methodology, give an overview of the methodology, and discuss lessons learned from over 71 utility project implementations in 8 states. The audience will come away with a better understanding of this innovative approach that can help them improve their new infrastructure development processes.
