Chart of Principles Global Union for Sustainability (June 2012)
1. Global Union for Sustainability
Aware of our responsibility not only to demand, but also to act, individually and collectively, adopting attitudes and
making the changes we want to see in the world, we invite all of those who identify with the principles below to
create a permanent, open, plural, catalyst, and collaborative space, where people and organizations from all over
the planet can be mutually strengthened and commit effectively to the construction of a proper, happy, fair, safe
and environmentally-friendly society.
Our Principles, in agreement with principles and values of the United Nations, notably regarding matters of peace,
human rights and sustainability, are:
• Commitment – Participants to the Global Union are all and any organizations and individuals that, agreeing
with these principles, declare publicly a commitment to adopt actions with effective impact in favor of
sustainability, going beyond the implementation of national legislations and international treaties and
conventions.
• Effectiveness – Commitments and agreements must translate into concrete and transformational actions –
verifiable and measurable – in strategic areas in the social, economic, environmental, political, and cultural
dimensions.
• Pluralism – The Global Union is open to participation by diverse groups of the global society, such as
businesses, workers, civil society organizations, social movements, women, youth, farmers, indigenous
populations, local governments, academia, parliaments, state agencies and religious and spiritual
organizations of all faith.
• Autonomy – The space of and relationships at the Global Union must encourage the co-creation and sharing
of initiatives, with autonomy in the implementation and self-managed monitoring, respecting these
principles and directives.
• Convergence – The Global Union seeks for a wide synergy of actions and objectives, complementing the
existing multilateral spaces of intergovernmental, corporate and non-governmental nature.
• Exemplary – The participants of this movement believe that their actions and attitudes must express the
changes they wish to see in the world.
• Transformation – The objective of the Global Union will only be attained with deep and urgent changes in
the way we produce, consume, coexist and organize ourselves, leading to real social, economic, political and
cultural transformations.
• Solidarity: Global Union members should willingly share know-how so as to make possible for other
members the replication of good practices in terms of innovative commitments with greater efficiency and
broader impact.
Our Directives are:
• The movement is open to participants from all over the planet, through online interaction and an Annual
Conferences
• Participation is based on compliance with the principles of the Global Union and on submissions of voluntary
commitments and of progress reports, noted publicly by participants in the Web.
• Participants can adhere to commitments or agreements already registered at the Global Union space, or
they can propose their own commitments. They can also, individually or jointly, monitor the compliance of
commitments by participants of other public processes, such as, for example, multilateral agreements,
electoral promises or voluntary goals.
2. • The movement is self-managed and is supported by a Global Committee, responsible for assuring
compliance with the principles, and by an Executive Secretariat, in charge of activities that propagate the
movement
• All participants are encouraged to propagate the Global Union and its proposals, being autonomous to do so
with their own technical and financial means, always aligned with these principles and directives.
