Banaras Saris are not
just something that
covers body. It is the
soul of beauty or to put
it simple, it is something
beyond a saree.
Varanasi is one of the cities
in Uttar Pradesh. The saris
made in that city are called as
‘Banaras’ or ‘Benaras’ saris.
Banaras saris are generally
known for gold and silver
brocade (richly decorative)
or Zari, fine silk and opulent
embroidery. Banaras saris are
identified countrywide and are
termed as one among the finest
saris in India.
Characteritstics of
Banaras saris.
Mughal inspired designs such
as intricate intertwining floral
and foliate motifs, kalga and
bel, a string of upright leaves
called jhallar at the outer, edge
of border is a characteristic of
these saris.
Gold work, compact weaving,
figures with small details,
metallic visual effects, pallus, jal
(a net like pattern), and mina
work are the added features.
History of Banaras saris.
In the 14th century, weaving
of brocades with intricate
designs using gold and
silver threads, became the
specialty of Banaras.
Brocade and Zari textiles
of Banaras are found in the
19th century. When Gujarat
weavers migrated to Varanasi
in 1603, the silk brocade
weaving in Banaras in 17th
century and became the
masters in further centuries.

Gorakhpur, Chandauli,
Bhadohi, Jaunpur and
Azamgarh districts in Uttar
Pradesh, accompany Varanasi

Banaras saris varieties.
To say in particular, Banaras
saris are divided into four
varieties like pure silk (Katan),
Organza (Kora) with Zari and
silk, Georgette and Shattir.
Basing on the designing
process, these varieties
are subdivided into other
categories, which include
Jangla, Tanchoi, Vaskat,
Cutwork, Tissue and Butidar.
