  • In 2012: 69% Female, 31% Male (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • In 2012: 84% undergrads, 16% grad students (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • Seniors took this survey the most, we did have a table at the Commencement fair.
  • Last year only 48% of students surveyed owned a smartphone AND 17% planned to buy one. (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • In 2010, UNH Device Usage Survey, only 11% of surveyed students had an iPhone, 10% Android, 15% Blackberry, and 5% other smartphone… (405 students surveyed in October 2010). Last year 52% of students surveyed owned an iPhone AND 33% owned an Android device. 14% had a Blackberry… (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • In 2012: Facebook and Twitter were at the very top, followed by games like Words with Friends and Angry Birds, then Pandora. (700 students surveyed in March 2012) Instagram and Snapchat are the only differences in 2013.
  • Half were familiar with the app, but that doesn’t mean they’re using it…
  • Right now, UNH has over 15,160 fans on Facebook. Facebook continues to be the most popular social network. A recent Pew survey has shown that younger students are turning away from it, embracing Tumblr, Twitter, and Google+. Luckily, UNH already has those social networks in place and we continue to monitor them each day. Source: http://www.theatlanticwire.com/technology/2013/05/facebook-survey-pew/65469/
  • Majority of student are on Facebook 1 hour per day.
  • In late 2008, UNH asked students if they used Twitter, although some students thought it could be a useful tool, not many were actually using it. ECAR Technology study from 2009 did not list Twitter. Right now, @UofNH has over 5,500 followers on Twitter, @UNHStudents have over 830 followers.
  • @UofNH is the most followed Twitter account followed by @UNHWildcats and @UNHStudents
  • Currently we have over 3,000 followers on Google+. Very important for SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
  • We have almost 700 followers on Foursquare. More if other departments offered incentives and advertised.
  • 740 followers on UNH Pinterest, many more share our photos across the social network, or just follow certain boards.
  • We have over 2,640 followers on Instagram. UNHStudents also has an account with over 570 followers.
  • Our LinkedIn company page has more than 6150 fans, the Alumni Group now has over 9,300 members and continues to grow each day.
  • 320 subscribers, but more importantly we have over 218,400 total views on our YouTube page.
  • Yelp is the best way to find great local businesses and ratings.
  • Many students use Tumblr. UNH has a Tumblr account, which is mostly reposts from our Instagram, Flickr. Occasionally we will post original material. VINE is a new social network owned by Twitter. It is 6 seconds of video. Create short, beautiful, looping videos in a simple and fun way for your friends to see. Many higher ed schools have jumped on VINE, including UNH with over 665 followers in a short time. VINE is iPhone only.
  • In 2012: 57% 0-2 hours, 38% 3-5 hours, and 5% 6 or more hours. (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • In 2012: 18% Strongly Agree, 41% Agree, 24% neither Agree or Disagree, 10% Disagree, and 7% Strongly Disagree (700 students surveyed in March 2012).
  • In 2012: 23% said Yes and 77% said No. (700 students surveyed in March 2012), up very slightly. The reason? I think we need to make sure QR codes are used correctly. Don’t use them to bring students to a website that they can already visit, but something fun, interesting, or interactive (video, song, contest, etc)
  • In 2012: 35% said personal, 7% Professional, and 58% said Both. (700 students surveyed in March 2012)
  • Examples of how incoming students are using Social Media and how UNH is responding. Many more examples offered via Storify link above.
  • Examples of how graduating seniors use social media. Storify will show a more robust picture, many more examples.
