Aisha and Safwan
1. Aisha and Safwan
In the fifth year of the Hijra (December AD 626) Muhammad, the prophet of Islam,
picked his wife Aisha to accompany him in his campaign against the Jewish tribe of Bani
Al Mustalik. Aisha was 13 years old, Muhammad was 58.
The Jews were attacked without warning while they were watering their cattle. Most of
the men were killed, their wives and children were enslaved.

Narrated Ibn Aun:
I wrote a letter to Nafi and Nafi wrote in reply to my letter that the Prophet had
suddenly attacked Bani Mustaliq without warning while they were heedless and
their cattle were being watered at the places of water. Their fighting men were
killed and their women and children were taken as captives; the Prophet got
Juwairiya on that day. Nafi said that Ibn 'Umar had told him the above narration
and that Ibn 'Umar was in that army.

Among the captives was Juwayriya, the beautiful wife of the tribe's chief.
Aisha was jealous of Juwayriya because of her stunning beauty.

Narrated Aisha: Juwayriya bint al-Harith... was a very beautiful woman...by Allah,
as soon as I saw her at the door of my room, I hated her.
2. ..........................................................................................................................................
Aisha couldn’t be more right; Muhammad immediately promoted Juwayriya from slave
to.. his wife!
On its way back to Medina the army had an overnight stop. Aisha felt the need to leave
the camp to answer the call of nature. Her return to the camp was delayed because,
according to her, she had to search for her dropped necklace.
She probably spent more time looking for it than the time it took the army to prepare to
move and actually leave the place and completely disappear from sight! She probably did
not hear or sense the movement of an army of seven hundred men, with their women,
horses, camels, captives and slaves! When she came back to the camp, she found that the
army had already left the site.
She stayed in her place hoping that Muhammad would realize that she was missing, and
return to look for her. As it turned out, Muhammad, who was probably too occupied with
Juwayriya, did not come back to rescue Aisha, and did not even notice her absence until
his arrival to Medina.
Then a young soldier, Safwan bin al Mu’attal, who had also lagged behind for some
reason, saw Aisha, recognized her, and gave her a ride back.
Under everyone’s gaze, Aisha and Safwan returned together.
This started gossip, which soon developed into a scandal.
...........................................................................................................................................
While Safwan was young, Muhammad was old, fat, and out of shape. Muhammad was
also sexually impotent*.

Even leading Muslim figures like Ali, the fourth Caliph, and Hassan Ibn Thabit,
Muhammad's poet, were drawn into spreading gossips
in Medina.
3. Muhammad himself must have had his suspicions as well, because he neglected Aisha,
who was ill and lodged with her parents for nearly a month.
Muhammad’s nightmare was the thought of Aisha showing signs of pregnancy. A
pregnant Aisha would mean an unfaithful wife because Muhammad did not sleep with
her since his marriage with Juwayriya.
After a month, Aisha got her menses and Gabriel came down with the news that she was
innocent and those who thought otherwise were guilty.
Qur'an 24:11
Those who brought forward the lie are a body among yourselves: think it not to be
an evil to you; On the contrary it is good for you: to every man among them (will
come the punishment) of the sin that he earned, and to him who took on himself the
lead among them, will be a penalty grievous.

This four-witness requirement has been a disaster for muslim women since in muslim
societies, muslim males can rape with near impunity.

By revealing these verses, Muhammad accidentally contradicted his own teachings.
It was him, who asserted in an authentic hadith that ‘whenever a man and a woman are

The point of this story is not to prove the innocence or guilt of Aisha. This story is more
about the way these verses were revealed to Muhammad. It seems that whenever
Muhammad was in need of help, Allah was there personally at his service providing him
with whatever he needed*.

Khaula bint Hakim was one of those ladies who presented themselves to the Prophet
for marriage. 'Aisha said, "Doesn't a lady feel ashamed for presenting herself to a
man?" But when the Verse: "(O Muhammad) You may postpone (the turn of) any

Apostle! I do not see, but, that your Lord hurries in pleasing you.' "
