  • 2. 456 million people speak English. English language is the native language of 12 nations and the official or semi-official language of 33 more nations.
  • 3. Mother-tongue Official (second language) or semi-official Mother-tongue co-exists with other languages ENGLISH AS A WORLD LANGUAGE
  • 4. One of every seven people in the world speaks English.
  • 5. I think that people prefer English to other Foreign languages because: 1 - one of every seven people in the world speaks English. 2 - English Language has become the « new Latin », the lingua franca , of the century. 3 - one must know English to be a part of the 21 st century. 4 - English is easier to learn than any other language because it easily borrows local words and phrases.
  • 6. 75% of the world’s mail is in English . 75%
  • 7. 60% 60% of the world’s radio stations broadcast in English
  • 8. 60% of the world’s telephone calls а re made in English . 60%
  • 9. More than half of the world’s periodicals are published in English.
  • 10. Finally English is the international language of businesspeople , pilots and air traffic controllers , diplomats and politicians , sportspeople , scientists , doctors and students.
  • 11. Britain. The official view
  • 12. Britain is a stable and democratic society. It is the leading member of the Commonwealth and has a major world role as a member of the United Nations Security Council.
  • 13. Britain is the fifth largest trading nation is the world. It is one of the largest exporters of goods and is a major centre for financial and insurance services.
  • 14. Britain is an important world producer of oil natural gas and coal. The standard of living of the average Briton is similar to that of other citizens of Western countries , and a good deal higher than that of Japan and other East Asian countries.
  • 15. Universities and institutes of higher education attract over 50 , 000 foreign students a year.
  • 16. Nobel prizes for science have been won by sixty-eight British citizens. Britain has nuclear weapons , a strong army and remains a country widely respected all over the world.
  • 17. THE TOURIST AUTHORITY ’S VIEW
  • 18. Britain has a rich history. In Britain one can see almost 600 of famous historic sights – castles , gardens , monuments , cathedrals , etc. Colourful royal ceremonies attract millions of visitors each year.
  • 19. People travel to Scotland , to the Lake District and other areas of Britain to enjoy the beautiful scenery.
  • 20. London – the world’s classical music capital offers numerous concerts , ballets , operas , and festivals all year round.
  • 21. International cultural events such as the Edinburgh Festival attracts many visitors. Popular attractions are outside London in the Jorvik Viking Centre , the National Railway Museum in York , the National Museum of Photography in Bradford , the Royal Marine Museum at Portsmouth , “ Cadbury World˝ in Birmingham , and the lovely cathedral city in Norwich.
