1. Portugal’s dependence on external
energy suppliers, renewable energy,
and interconnection play a key role
in the Portuguese economy. Main
players are EDP (power utility) and
REN (national grid). EDP’s strategic
plan 2012-2015 foresees a total
investment of €6 bn. Main projects
include hydro (2.1GW by 2015) and
renewables, with a focus on offshore
wind (WindFloat). REN´s investment
plan foresees €1.6 bn until 2016
focusing on better quality in the
supply of electricity (€800 million);
integration of renewables in the
national and Iberian network (€450
million) and Interconnection with
Europe (€150 million).
Portugal has one of the most
advanced telecommunication
infrastructure in Europe, with a
national broadband coverage very
close to 100%. The market is very
competitive, witnessing a large
concentration of players with major
mergers, both domestically and in
the international context, with the Oi/
Portugal Telecom deal. Portugal has
one of the highest rates in the EU
in terms of investment in the sector.
In the next 5 years the main players
plan to invest around €2 bn in
infrastructure, network development
and service offering.
Investment needs in transport
infrastructure were assessed by
a Working Group for High Added
Value Infrastructure, who identified
30 projects as priorities until 2020
(with a focus on rail and ports). The
Portuguese Government converted
it in a more ambitious plan by
increasing the number of projects
to 59 and total investment up to
€6 bn. Despite considering EU
funding and some public investment,
Government has been emphasising
that private investment is crucial for
the plan to succeed.

This event will address infrastructure
developments in Portugal and in the UK,
where companies from both countries can explore
the potential for partnerships to deliver projects in
both markets (and others, such as the Portuguese
speaking Angola, Mozambique, and Brazil, where
Portuguese players have been particularly active).

2. UK delegation
