The event will include presentations on projects and opportunities in Scotland, case studies of Portuguese companies working in the UK, and the R&D and start-up ecosystem in Portugal. Attendees can pre-book bilateral meetings. The UK operates one of the most transparent energy markets governed by Ofgem, with network operators required to publish eight-year business plans highlighting investments, customer outcomes, and innovation plans. The aim is to incentivize investment and innovation with clear customer benefits.
UK Energy Networks Investment & Collaboration Opportunities
1. Why attend?
The electricity networks of the UK operate in one of the most transparent markets in the world. Over a period
of many years, the regulatory regime, governed by Ofgem, has pushed the system and network operators in
a direction that has led to the networks they operate being able to respond to the future demands and
requirements of a dynamic, flexible, robust and secure system.
The latest regulatory framework is called RIIO (Revenue = Incentives + Innovation + Outputs) and this
requires all network operators - transmission and distribution - to agree and publish eight year business
plans that highlight their investment plans, the expected customer outcomes and very impor tantly their plans
for innovation. The aim of RIIO is to incentivise investment and innovation, where there is a clear and
tangible customer benefit. The transparency provided by the RIIO regime has brought a significant amount
of commercial value.
The main objective of this session organised by the Department for International Trade in Lisbon is to
promote the business opportunities in the energy networks sector in the UK.
