2. Globally
The mHealth market is expected to
be worth £18bn in 2015. Mobile health
applications alone generated over
£430m by 250 million users. By 2016
it is expected that close to 5 million
patients will be using tele-monitoring
devices. It is estimated that by 2017,
3.4bn people will own a smartphone
and half of them will be using
mHealth apps.
Europe
The EU believes health apps could
lead to €99bn of savings, helping
cut healthcare costs. Investment in
mHealth research has reached €100m
so far, with a further €95m estimated
for the next 2 years.
Portugal
The country is on the forefront of new
technology adoption. Fixed broadband
covers 100% of homes and NGA is
available to 85% of homes (62% in
the EU). LTE is available to 91% of the
population and the penetration rate of
smartphones is 33%. In the Healthcare
system, 66% of the hospitals have a
broadband connection (36% in the EU)
and 67% exchange clinical information
with external providers. For GPs, the
rate is 43% (28% in the EU).
Main opportunities lay on new
innovative mHealth applications, and
on solutions that match the Public
projects’ needs for self-monitoring
of chronic diseases, ePrescription,
eDispensing, electronic patient record
and others, to meet the ambitious
eHealth objectives of the Portuguese
Ministry of Health.
