4 tips to make your lawn winter ready
1. 4 Tips to Make Your Lawn Winter-Ready You might not think that you have to do anything to get your lawn ready for winter but, there is a lot you can do to keep your lawn healthy into spring. Here are some tips you can use to make your plants healthy and ready in time for spring next year: 1. Feed the lawn: Lawns with cool-weather grass such as the Kentucky Bluegrass should be fertilized in two waves. The first wave, from mid to late September in areas such as the Greater Toronto Area, should be a fertilizer high in nitrogen content. The second application, shortly before Christmas should be a fertilizer that contains a large amount of phosphorous, preparing the lawn for the next year.
2. 2. Keep Watering: In most areas, the amount of rain decreases in the colder months especially in Southern Ontario. Generally speaking, your lawn should be getting an inch of water every 14 to 21 days. The ground should be moist as it heads towards winter. However, be sure to not over water, making the lawn soggy, which could encourage mold. 3. Increase your Cutting Heights: During the cooler months, grass grows slower so it can be a good idea to raise the cutting height a little so as to not damage the grass. Try not to cut your grass lower than 2.5 cm. The major risk of mowing too low is ‘scalping’ it which can brown your grass. Doing so too much can cause your lawn to weaken which will allow more weeds and diseases to take hold. 4. A Good Last Soak: Before the severe effects of winter kicks in, it can be a good idea to give your lawn one last long drink. This helps activate lawn fertilizers which can keep your lawn in good shape until the coming spring. See more at: http://turfrain.com/4-tips-to-make-your-lawn-winter-ready/
