What You Need to Know About Indian Numerology
1. What You Need to Know About Indian Numerology
Since times immemorial, Astrology has acted as a trusted guide to the masses in India. A little known
fact is that Numerology has been equally important and is equally, if not more, old. Yes, the relatively
recent Pythagorean system of Numerological predictions (came up in 6th Century BC) with the famous
mathematician Pythagoras is predated by a form that has been practiced in India (primarily in present
day Tamil Nadu and Karnataka) which, is called Indian Numerology, for the lack of a better name. It deals
with interpretation of numbers to gain insights into the future. While there are several other
numerological systems like the Chaldean, Chinese, Egyptian, Kabbalah, Christian, etc. each differs from
the other in terms of calculations, interpretations and the scope.
Indian Numerology is rooted in our Ancient Vedas (Rigveda, Samveda, Yajurveda and Atharvaveda) and
has predominantly been based in Southern India, knowing that the Dravidians are now dominant
residents of the south while the northerners trace their lineage back to the Aryans. Worldwide,
numerology as a pseudoscience and pseudo-art has used astrology as a crutch, the same is not true in
the Indian context. With not only numerology but even sacrifices and occult finding mention in
Atharvaveda, Vedangas and Upanishadas, predictive sciences in India have traditionally found many
takers and believers. Just like astrology, this branch of prediction has also been riddled with con-men
but true practitioners of the art can still be found. Also, the relatively recent attraction of the TV media
towards this branch has ensured its economic feasibility for the practitioners.
Though there is barely any written history of Indian numerology’s development to its current form or a
record of master practitioners, we surprisingly find quite a coherent system in practice today. Almost all
practitioners agree that the three most important numbers in Indian Numerology are Name Number,
Destiny Number and Psychic Number. The system of assigning numbers is closer to the Chaldean system
than the modern system, with numbers being assigned to alphabets from 1 to 8 (unlike 1 to 9 in the
Pythagorean system), i.e.
1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8
A, I, J, Q & Y B, K & R C, G, L & S D, M & T E, H, N & X U, V & W O & Z F & P
Looking at each in detail:
NAME NUMBER: is calculated (using the above table) based on the name that you are most commonly
called by, not on the basis of your given name. It is instrumental in determining your relationship(s) with
people around you.
DESTINY NUMBER: Calculated on the basis of the above table and your date of birth, this number finds
the impact of your karma in past lives on the present one and assumes importance post 30 years of age.
2. PSYCHIC NUMBER: Based on your date of birth, it deals with how you see yourself and where will your
destiny leads you in terms of career. It’s immensely influential until 30 years of age, beyond which the
influence starts waning.
Indian numerology is that vast ocean of insight whose surface has barely been scratched up until but its
beauty is something that is best found out oneself, since the discovery doesn’t encompass knowledge
alone, rather enlightenment and a better understanding of oneself.
