A summary of Internet access in Asia Pacific 2014-2015. Data come from Blyth, Bill, and Les Taylor. Telephone and Internet Coverage Around the World: An ESOMAR Report. Amsterdam: ESOMAR, 2016.
2. The data source is Google Connected Consumer Survey (CCS)
The authors of the report remarked that the CCS asked how often respondents access the internet
for personal reasons. That is not the same as having internet access in the home which will be
lower.
The actual CCS question was “How often do you access the internet for personal reasons?”
The answer to the question could include access outside the home or personal access at work
There’re 17 countries in Asia Pacific covered by CCS in 2014 and 2015
Data collection method was either Face-To-Face (FTF) survey or Computer-Assisted Telephone
Interviewing (CATI)
FTF (7 countries): China, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam
CATI (10 countries): Australia, Hong Kong, Israel, Japan, New Zealand, South Korea, Saudi Arabia,
Singapore, Taiwan, United Arab Emirates
3. Based on Figure 7, page 11
There’s no increase in internet coverage
for Indonesia from 2014 to 2015
The coverage level stayed at 44%
However, given the rapid growth in the
use of smartphones, it wouldn’t be
surprising at all if internet coverage
would exceed 50% in 2017
High internet access growth occurred in
Thailand (+17%), Vietnam (+16%),
Philippines (+11%), and Malaysia (+9%)
In 2015, only 8 out of 17 Asia Pacific
countries surveyed had internet coverage
above 80%
The authors suggest that at present the
internet should not be used for surveys in
the countries where the internet
coverage is still below 80%
