14. “The message from the public
couldn’t be clearer: there’s a desire
to cycle more, but that a lack of safe
places to ride bikes is off-putting.”

A need to overcome the conflict between different groups that are working towards the same thing: a better transport network that benefits the people of the city
There were a lot of good things about Bristol that made us European Green Capital, but there were still a lot of things that we needed to work on.
We’ve been consulting with people from across the city at a number of community events
9th June 2015 we held an Active Cities Summit with Nike, Bristol Green Capital and Active Living Research
The Summit was part of a global campaign to make clear the gains which can be made through creating activity friendly cities, in human, economic, social and environmental capital
Active Living Research carried intensive review of available evidence on all the benefits of activity-friendly environments. Their study shows the competitive economic advantages accruing to cities that encourage physically active lifestyles
The research was launched at the Active Cities Summit and made widely available, to help national and local decision makers develop the best possible policies and strategies.
Alongside increased productivity, school performance, property values, and health and wellbeing, the report highlights that physically active populations make cities more economically competitive.
Copenhagen has produced the reports since 1996
The accounts have helped planners gradually remove barriers to cycling
As a result 45% of journeys to work, school and university are now made by bike
The Danish capital of Copenhagen was recently voted as the happiest city in the world
A third of its residents feel safe enough to travel by bicycle for everyday journeys.
Working with cities that have expressed a long-term commitment to invest in cycling
We want to use the results of Bike Life to influence governments to invest
Sustrans worked with local councils to gather views from the public about cycling in the cities and find out what would encourage more people to try two-wheeled travel. The results have now been released to inform future investment into cycling in the cities.
What are we trying to achieve?
Increase understanding – between different road users, between governments (national and local) and the population
Demonstrate demand for better cycling facilities and more investment
Part of the toolkit for creating liveable cities
Sustained measurement & reporting of progress to use the report as a tool for better planning
Three quarters of people (73%) think that things would be better if people in general cycled more
Two thirds (66%) believe that more cycling would make their area a better place to live and work
75% of people want national governments to invest more in making cycling safer.
71% of those who said they never used a bike still backed an increase in spending
79% of people say they want improved safety for people riding bikes
Amongst occasional bike riders, and those who don’t currently ride a bike but would like to, protected bike lanes and traffic-free cycle routes are what they would like.

To give some background and an overview of the Good Transport Plan to date
The story so far and where we want to go from here
We have learnt that we need to raise our ambitions and continue to invest in our transport systems
We also all need to work together – a collective and personal responsibility

Keeping up with Copenhagen
Copenhagen’s target is 50% of trips to be made to work and education by 2025
Quote shows that Copenhagen expects that it will be a greater challenge to get the next 5% on their bike.
City centre reprioritisation is something that we still want to do
