Physical disability is a limitation on a person's physical functioning such as
mobility. The conventional way for a physically disabled person to cope with the
problem of mobility impairment is a wheelchair. A wheelchair needs to be
manually operated by hands but the problem arises when a person has upper limbs
disability. It is important that they should be given an alternative way for operating
wheelchair. There is large and growing demand for this service and this project
aims to fulfill that need.
2. We innovated a wheelchair that is so user friendly to the disabled person sitting on
it that he/she feels fully able and does not had to rely on operating the wheelchair
with hands or by help of another person. DBWheel, the name of the working
prototype of this idea to enable a fully disabled person to operate the wheelchair
with help of voice commands and a partially disabled person can use either voice
command feature or he can make use of an android application we have developed
to operate the wheelchair more precisely and to control the various security
systems both for safety and anti-theft. DBWheel has been equipped with obstacle
detection, anti-slope speed reduction system, proximity alarm, user authentication,
emergency lights, and custom speed control. The android application is specially
developed to make a wheelchair more and more user friendly, it contains a control
interface which looks like a gamepad and at the same time is very efficient to use,
in the application settings one can set the custom speed of wheel chair, turn on/off
various security and safety protocols.
Our motive throughout the development period was to innovate a wheelchair
which is friendly to use, is economical, can be commercialized, requires less
hardware.
A 3D model of the prototype, the black box contains
all the circuitry.
