1. Reflection of the Project
During processing the project at my placement, I developed a respectful
relationship with the children, ECE teacher and parents. Initially I observed
children‟s behaviours and interests to get some cues for planning my project
theme. I discussed the supervising teacher about my plan to do the „Farm Animal‟
project. While talking, children gave me ideas about their knowledge on farm
animals, and asked me questions to know more. One child asked me, “Are you
writing my question?” I said, „Of course, I am doing.” I explained my web to them,
and made them understand how important their ideas were. Children felt valued
when they found that their ideas and questions has virtually led the project. After
that, I posted a notice informing parents about our project. When I got an
opportunity to talk with the parents, I discussed about progress of our project.
Before doing my six activities of the project, I have shown my planning sheet to
my ECE teacher, and discussed with her about various pros and cons. She
appreciated my strategy, and permitted me to proceed on. In this project, children
worked in all curriculum areas such as Art, Math, Sensory, Music, Science, and
Drama. I displayed our project for parents when we completed it.
Reggie Emilia‟s philosophy influenced me to interact with the children.
Reggie Emilia‟s emergent curriculum is based on children‟s interest, questions,
and developmental domains. It emphasizes about the children‟s cues to develop
2. any activity (Hand out of ECEP-102, given by Karen Campbell). The Emergent
curriculum believes children as protagonist in curriculum activities. They work
together with other children and also with the surrounding community. The teacher
is a partner, nurture, and guide who help children expressing their knowledge
through representational work. The emergent curriculum believes documentation
as a tool for communicating children, parents, and teachers. (Hand out of ECEP-
102, given by Karen Campbell). In my project I followed all of these strategies.
The children and I have learnt about the world‟s different farm animals‟
through exploring the different activities on farm animals. We arranged first hand
experiences in different activities. We also arranged visual video clips on farm
animals. Such first-hand experiences provided us with precise knowledge about
their environment and the physical properties of the animals‟. This experience with
farm animals is valuable as a citizen of the world. Because this experience gave
them the idea that farm animals are valuable elements for our health, and
environment. The project also conveyed the message that as global citizen we
should take proper care to the farm animals.
