A
Guide
to
Cheerleading
1.
A
Brief
History
of
Cheerleading
Cheerleading
began
at
Princeton,
and
then
Minnesota,
Universities
as
an
all-‐male
activity,
supporting
on-‐
campus
sports
teams
in
the
late
19th
century.
Women
did
not
become
a
prominent
feature
in
cheerleading
until
WWII,
then
incorporating
gymnastics
and
dance
into
cheerleading
activities.
In
the
1960’s,
cheerleading
was
introduced
into
American
high
schools,
and
the
first
collegiate
cheerleading
competition
was
held.
Until
then,
cheerleading
was
primarily
an
activity
to
encourage
and
support
sports
teams,
and
competitive
routines
were
still
based
on
this
idea.
However,
cheerleading
has
since
become
a
sport
in
its
own
right,
with
elite
athletes
requiring
the
same
mental
and
physical
strength
as
those
in
any
other
sport.
Collegiate
cheerleading
in
the
USA
has
led
from
this
sideline
cheer
into
modern
competitive
cheerleading.
Over
the
years,
the
difficulty
of
stunts
and
tumbling
has
increased,
with
added
focus
on
synchronicity,
technique
and
performance
in
routines.
Cheerleading
is
now
a
major
sport
in
over
100
countries
worldwide,
and
we
look
forward
to
continuing
the
collegiate
tradition
at
the
University
of
Melbourne.

Competitive
Cheerleading
in
Australia
Competitive
cheerleading
has
been
active
in
Australia
for
over
10
years,
though
it
seems
many
have
only
recently
discovered
it
here.
In
the
last
4
years,
the
number
of
cheerleaders
in
Australia
has
exploded,
with
Nationals
competitions
doubling
in
size
each
year.
There
are
many
competitions
run
in
Australia,
provided
by
several
companies.
In
Victoria,
there
are
two
competition
providers
–
Australian
All-‐Star
Cheerleading
Federation
(AASCF)
and
World
Cup
Cheer
(WCC).
Southern
University
Games
has
also
offered
a
University
Cheerleading
competition
for
the
last
2
years,
and
is
expected
to
continue
to
do
so.
AASCF
is
the
largest
cheerleading
body
in
Australia,
and
provides
much
of
the
training
for
cheerleading
coaches
and
judges,
and
is
affiliated
with
the
International
All-‐Star
Federation
(IASF)
and
the
United
States
All-‐Star
Federation
(USASF),
leading
bodies
in
cheerleading
globally.
As
such,
our
club
and
all
of
our
members
are
insured
through
AASCF
against
personal
injury
acquired
at
training
sessions.
AASCF
offers
four
competitions
throughout
the
year:
-‐ Winterfest:
the
first
competition
of
the
year,
held
in
June.
Winterfest
is
considered
by
most
teams
as
the
warmup
or
practice
competition.
The
atmosphere
is
always
very
friendly
and
supportive,
as
teams
test
out
their
routine
for
the
first
time.
-‐ All-‐Star
Battle:
this
is
a
new
competition
for
Australia,
following
the
USA
format
of
two-‐day,
two-‐chance
competitions.
Each
team
competes
their
routine
twice,
on
two
consecutive
days,
and
the
highest
aggregate
score
wins.
-‐ States:
for
teams
that
cannot
travel
for
Nationals,
this
is
the
big
one!
For
all
others,
it
is
generally
considered
the
qualifier
for
Nationals.
There
is
always
a
giant
buzz
here,
and
the
competition
is
fierce!
-‐ Nationals:
by
far
the
largest
competition
of
the
year,
held
over
four
days.
This
is
the
opportunity
to
see
the
best
in
the
country,
and
to
BE
the
best
in
the
country!
Winners
here
can
obtain
a
bid
to
go
to
international
competitions.
WCC
also
offers
a
number
of
competitions,
though
often
smaller
in
size:

-‐ States:
as
with
AASCF
states,
this
is
a
big
competition,
and
an
opportunity
to
see
some
different
faces!
The
excitement
and
level
of
competition
here
is
just
as
high,
and
always
great
fun.
-‐ Spirit
Championships:
similar
to
the
AASCF
Nationals,
this
is
the
big
one
for
WCC!
Though
not
as
big,
it’s
just
as
competitive,
and
a
win
here
can
also
win
an
international
bid.
Currently,
cheerleaders
are
able
to
compete
in
the
All-‐Star
division
(for
anyone)
or
the
Scholastic
division.
Scholastic
teams
must
have
minimum
80%
members
be
currently
enrolled
students
at
their
educational
institution.
Melbourne
Spirit
primarily
fields
scholastic
teams,
but
will
consider
fielding
All-‐Star
teams
if
there
is
enough
interest.
3. The
Routine
A
full
cheerleading
routine
lasts
for
2:30,
and
is
accompanied
by
high
energy
music.
The
routine
consists
of
four
main
categories:
a. Motions
b. Stunts
c. Tumbling
d. Jumps
Motions
refer
static
arm/leg
positions,
traditionally
used
in
cheers
with
pon
poms,
and
usually
incorporated
into
cheer
routines
within
dance
sections.
Motions
must
be
performed
in
a
fast,
snappy,
and
precise
manner,
so
elite
cheerleaders
will
practice
motions
daily
to
perfect
them.
They’re
also
important
in
stunts
and
jumps,
and
contribute
greatly
to
the
score
if
performed
correctly.
Some
popular
motions
are
shown
below:

Stunts
are
the
distinctive
feature
of
cheerleading
–
the
bit
where
you
lift,
throw
and
catch
other
people
in
exciting
and
challenging
ways!
Stunts
always
have
at
least
one
flyer
(the
person
in
the
air,
being
lifted
or
thrown),
and
can
have
upto
four
bases
below
them.
A
Stunt
with
2
–
4
bases
is
called
a
Group
Stunt
and
the
base
positons
are:
-‐ Back
spot:
stands
behind
the
flyer,
usually
holds
the
ankles
in
the
air.
Provides
extra
strength
and
stability
to
the
stunt.
Very
important
in
low
levels,
often
not
used
in
the
highest
levels.
Main
job
is
ensuring
the
safety
of
the
flyer.
-‐ Main
base:
stands
(usually)
to
the
right
of
the
flyer,
holds
the
right
foot.
The
primary
contact/support
for
the
flyer,
except
in
two-‐footed,
non-‐twisting
skills
(e.g.
elevator).
-‐ Second
base:
stands
(usually)
to
the
left
of
the
flyer,
holds
the
left
foot
(2-‐footed
stunts)
or
shares
the
right
foot
with
the
main
(single-‐leg
stunts).
Assists
main
base
in
the
lift
and
catch,
adds
additional
support/contact
to
flyer.
-‐ Front
sport:
stands
in
front
of
the
stunt.
Can
assist
in
the
lift,
throw
and
catch.
Usually
provides
additional
support/contact
to
the
flyer
on
the
shins,
or
to
the
bases
on
the
wrists.
All
of
these
positions
are
important,
and
every
person
in
the
stunt,
bases
and
flyer,
must
put
in
equal
effort
and
concentration
to
ensure
the
safety
and
success
of
the
stunt.
Partner
stunting,
or
co-‐ed
stunting,
always
has
just
one
base
and
usually
one
flyer.
The
main
base
can
be
assisted
in
the
lift
or
catch,
and
there
is
always
a
safety
spot
behind
the
stunt.
Partner
stunting
is
usually
a
male
base
with
a
female
flyer,
but
can
be
any
combination,
and
can
have
upto
four
flyers
in
the
air.
These
are
often
the
most
impressive
stunts,
and
score
the
highest
at
each
level.
Group
and/or
partner
stunts
can
also
connect
together
in
the
air
to
form
pyramids.
The
entire
team
is
usually
involved,
making
them
the
most
exciting
and
difficult
stunt
sequences
to
pull
off.
Added
complexity
is
achieved
through
the
use
of
transitions
–
the
movement
of
the
flyer
between
top
and
bottom
of
the
stunt,
and
into/out
of
the
stunt.
Flyers
do
not
have
to
be
small,
but
they
do
have
to
be
strong
and
flexible.
The
flyer
must
be
able
to
hold
strong
body
shapes
with
good
body
tension
so
that
they
are
stable
in
the
air.
Flexibility
is
important
as
flyers
are
required
to
pull
“lines”
in
the
air
–
essentially,
to
show
off
various
flexy
skills
whilst
standing
on
one
leg.
Some
basic
stunts
and
lines
are
listed
below.

out
youtube
videos

them
in
action.

Tumbling
in
cheerleading
refers
to
acrobatic
skills
such
as
rolls,
cartwheels,
handsprings
and
saults.
At
the
highest
level,
twisting
saults
and
flips
are
the
hardest
and
most
sought
tumbling
skills.
These
are
skills
which
anyone
can
acquire
with
the
right
training,
though
progression
is
usually
slower
if
you
don’t
have
a
gymnastics
background.
For
the
beginner
squad,
all
cheerleaders
will
be
expected
to
progress
towards
cartwheels
and
roundoffs
for
routines.
Front
and
back
handsprings
will
also
be
advantageous.
For
the
intermediate
squad,
cheerleaders
will
generally
be
required
to
have
a
standing
back
handspring,
and
to
work
towards
standing
and
running
tuck
saults.
However,
strong
bases
and
flyers
will
not
be
overlooked
due
to
a
lack
of
tumbling
ability.
Finally,
cheer
routines
always
involve
jumps.
There
are
four
jumps
in
cheerleading:
-‐ Toe
Touch
-‐ Herkie
(left
or
right
leg)
-‐ Pike
-‐ Backsault
In
beginner
cheer
(levels
1&2),
a
standing
back
tuck
is
not
allowed,
and
so
only
three
jumps
are
used.
At
all
levels,
toe
touches,
herkies
and
pikes
are
performed
in
the
same
manner,
and
so
a
level
one
team
can
produce
jumps
of
the
same
standard
as
a
level
6
team.
The
goal
of
every
cheerleader,
no
matter
which
level,
should
be
to
attain
perfect
jumps!
The
key
is
practice
practice
practice!
