Mise en Scene Lighting Storyline Editing
Categories Rated
This bar chart of averages illustrates the general audience response to each element of my music
video. All four categories assessed were rated considerably high by the audience. From these
results I have learnt that overall my audience feedback was greatly positive, hence my music
video was highly favourable. Nonetheless, these averages also demonstrate that the lighting was
the least effective, thus I have learnt that in order to improve my audience response in the future I
need to focus on developing my use of lighting.
When asked about the effectiveness of the mise en scene most audience
members said that this aspect of the music video was successful in reflecting
the characters turmoil and was effective in evoking sympathy in the audience.
Examples:
‘Foster beer cans = escapism in alcohol’
‘It makes you feel an attachment to the character’
‘Props- symbolise characters inner conflicts’
‘The flowers created a feeling of melancholy and pity’
‘Evokes a sense of ongoing pain’
From these audience quotes I have learnt that though mise en scene I was I able to suggest the
depressing tone of my music video, generating compassion and empathy in the audience. I have
also learnt that my chose of mise en scene was effective in supporting the narrative as the props,
costumes and make up aided in creating a sense of meaning which achieved my aim to display
awareness for domestic violence.
3. Maya Pursani Evaluation Questions
When asked about the locations used in my music video the majority of
audience members highlighted the beach as being the most effective in
creating a sense of heartbreak and seclusion.
Examples:
‘The sea side location shows us that she wants to escape her violent
relationship’
‘The beach = alone, wilderness or isolation’
‘Beach shows she is lonely and depressed’
‘The sea’s rough and uncontrollable nature reflects the protagonist’s life’
‘The sea represents anger and a continuous cycle of abuse’
From looking at the repetitive nature of the audience feedback I have learnt that I was able to
clearly illustrate the ideology of my music video with the use of locations. I included the beach in
order to demonstrate the shattering consequences of domestic violence, for example detachment
from society, solitude and desperation. This audience feedback has informed me that the audience
noticed and could comprehend this concept as their statements correspond with my ideologies.
When asked opinions on the effectiveness of the camera angles in my music
videos there were a variety of preferred shots.
Examples:
‘Close up of character’s face = shows emotions’
‘Extreme close up of the tear at the end= shows the girl’s fear for the future’
‘Wide shot of the hill = effective in showing separation and ending’
‘Most effective is the close up of the main character being abused on the floor’
‘The extreme close up of the single tear suggests she has cried so much she no
more tears to cry.’
‘The shot inside the mirror was most effective because I felt as though I was
peering into her life.’
From reading the range of favoured camera angles I have learnt that there are many effective
shots in my music video as the audience members seem highly keen on certain angles. However,
as the audience members easily chose their preferred camera angle it could be suggested that only
certain camera angles stand out as being successful and there is not a consistency in the
effectiveness of the shots. Therefore, I can appreciate that in the future I should aim to have
constant appealing shots. Nevertheless, I have learnt that my experimental and distinctive camera
angles created a positive response from the audience, thus they were highly successful.
4. Maya Pursani Evaluation Questions
The audience were asked to tick the genre
they believed the music video would fall
under.
9 people ticked indie
1 person ticked soul
1 person ticked pop
0 people ticked blues
0 people ticked RnB
3 people ticked more that one genre
1 person ticked indie 2 people ticked
and soul pop, indie and soul
The genre of my music video is indie, thus 9/14 audience members judged correctly and selected
the right genre. From this I have learnt that generally, I have expressed the genre of my music
video effectively through mise en scene, camera angles, locations and costume. Yet, as the
audience feedback is not 100% correct, thus I have also learnt that there are elements that need to
be improved or added in order to clearly convey the genre. Nevertheless, some may argue that indie
and soul communicate similar features as both genres endeavour to evoke emotion, thus the
achievement of my expression of genre may be slightly more succeeding.
100% of audience members said that they would watch
my music video on television.
This audience feedback has taught me that my
music video is appealing, engaging and
entertaining. I have learnt that the audience has
warmed to and are interested in my artist’s star
persona. This statistic informs me that overall
the construction of my music video was
successful.
