With a reliable mobility infrastructure in place, a wealth of productivity-enhancing mobility applications suddenly become possible. The convergence of voice, data and location also enables new applications that deliver much higher, easy to measure ROI Healthcare application place much greater demands on wireless than any other industry, giving rise to a need to a highly reliable and scalable infrastructure.
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13 Medical Grade Mobility means having secure uninterrupted connections at every point of care. Medical Grade Mobility is possible to achieve, but its not automatic with any wireless system you buy.
Healthcare customers all over the US and Europe choose Trapeze because we have the best wireless architecture to deliver secure, non-stop voice, video, data and location services in hospitals, clinics and residential care facilities . In fact healthcare deployments account for around 1/3 of our revenue.
Trapeze has a complete WLAN solution including a comprehensive family of hardware and software components for Real Time Location Services In fact the solution is so good, even other WLAN vendors OEM the technology from us.
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13 These applications are so mission critical that even the briefest moment of downtime directly impacts the quality of patient care, of the productivity of clinicians. As with all technology advances, once you make the leap, there is no turning back. When you cross the line and deploy EMR on a wide scale, it involves process re-engineering, and you quickly abandon the old way of doing things. More often than not, you push the envelope so far out, that there is no turning back, even if you wanted to. NonStop availability is a must have, even without considering some of the other pressures driving wireless in healthcare.
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13 Scaling performance and bandwidth on Wireless is not easy, because it’s a shared medium. And the demands are growing by the day. Not only is the user count growing, but medical devices of every type are becoming wireless enabled, as are personal devices like PDAs and SmartPhones, even HVAC and facilities control systems…and that’s not all. Hospitals have many proprietary legacy wireless systems too – such as nurse call, DECT phone systems and even passive RFID ID systems which are all being migrated to Wi-Fi to improve functionality and reduce support and operational costs. And on top of this Wireless Voice over IP is growing at about 30% in hospitals. And then there are bandwidth-draining mobile PACs and video applications on the horizon. SIDEBAR The advent of Ethernet switching (Kalpana 1989) was so long ago that its easy to forget Wireless is a SHARED MEDIUM that suffers from all the same problems that CSMA coaxial cable systems suffered from back in the day. Those problems included performance that fell like a stone, once a critical mass of users people started competing for bandwidth. In fact that’s precisely why Wireless is designed to be segmented just like old Ethernet networks were. In wireless this is done by having multiple cells using non-overlapping channels in the RF spectrum. Yet we are trying to do much more ambitious things on this medium. Things like VoIP – stuff you couldn’t even do 10 years ago, on a typical wired networks. In mature deployments a/b/g networks are already showing the strain, and slowing down. That’s a big driver for 802.11n. Another consideration that makes most platforms unsuitable, is the number of SSIDs needed to segregate different classes of users and traffic… as we have discussed Hospitals at least, have hundreds of applications and services all competing for capacity on the Wireless Network… 64 SSIDs per AP is a real requirement.
Trapeze infrastructure was designed for better scalability from the outset. Our highly distributed Smart Mobile architecture allows local switching as well as centralized switching enabling faster, lower latency connections AP to AP across the network and reduced dependence on the controller which is a potential performance bottleneck, especially of the controller is responsible for all the encryption (as is the case with Aruba’s proprietary system). All other vendors do encryption at the edge, because the encryption capacity scales as you add more APs. This is all good for voice quality and reliability, but it still doesn’t solve the problem of limited bandwidth.
In order to improve scalability, Trapeze has also invented many techniques for maximizing per user and per AP bandwidth availability. Band steering is huge, because most medical devices AND ALL phones
We solve ALL the problems on this slide.
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13
Trapeze Networks , A BELDEN Brand | Proprietary and Confidential | 05/21/13 Slide 05/21/13 You can use Location Services it to prevent dementia patients from wandering outside the building, or to locate the nearest doctor, or to find an available IV Pump. But its not limited to finding things. You can also use it to augment security by restricting patient and visitor access to the internet only to certain areas or certain times of day. You can use it to manage equipment inventory to ensure regulatory compliance, and maximize utilization. For example, the laborious task of calibrating IV pumps or upgrading firmware can be performed with fewer errors in a fraction of the time, putting devices back in service more quickly, and allowing reductions in inventory. Hospitals need to monitor the environmental data for temperature sensitive equipment, meds or specimens. And finally, its possible to streamline patient workflow, by serving up appropriate information at the point-of-care. For instance, as a doctor reaches a patient’s bedside, automatically retrieve the patient’s electronic records and prompt the doctor to scan the wristband. Trapeze location services, RingMaster and SmartPass all have APIs to enable integration with medical applications.
Most vendors stop at the first bullet. And at best have a very crude, impractical solution for enabling guest access.
