• Pest problem in Singapore was solved by
rewarding people who killed pest
• William Farquhar order his man to get food
from Melaka to solve famine problem. The
traders in Melaka also sailed to Singapore to
trade
• William Farquhar faced the lack of defense in
Singapore. His troops were ordered to fire
cannons when there is danger

4. • Criminal activities such as robbing, murdering
etc. happened. William Farquhar set up a
police force to solve these problems but it is
not strong enough to solve the problem
• Singapore was stranger to many places when
the British set up the settlement. William
Farquhar set up an office that attract
foreigners on Saint John’s Island. He also
asked the people in Melaka to trade and live
in Singapore

Raffles left for Bencoolen and promote William
Farquhar as the local ruler. William solve
many problems. He solve pest problem by
offering rewards to people solving pest
problem. Famine was solved by asking his
man to get food from Melaka. Lack of
defense was solved by asking his troop to
prepare weapons. Criminal activities was
solved by setting up a police force. Stranger
Singapore was solved by setting up an office
on Saint John’s Island to attract foreigners.
