How Hospitals Can Tackle Injury Claims Recoveries and ICD-10 - Brad Williams, RevClaims
1. Interview with: Brad Williams, Chief
Executive Officer, RevClaims
“Hospitals who do not have attorneys or
skilled insurance adjusters on staff
working injury claims should really ask
themselves if it makes sense to try
tackle this specialized area internally
when it only represents about 3 percent
of their total accounts. If they do not
have that skill set already in place,
outsourcing is their best option”,
advises Brad Williams, Chief Executive
Officer, RevClaims.
RevClaims is a service provider at the
marcus evans National Healthcare
CFO Summit Fall 2015 taking place in
Las Vegas, Nevada, October 18-20.
How do you identify promising
claims early on?
We have a three step method. First, we
train admission staff at various locations
through hospitals how to ask patients if
their visit is related to an accident or
injury as well as the correct follow-up
questions. Second, we use relevant
diagnosis codes that identify the cause
of the injury, thus we filter by those
codes to find claims. Third, we look to
see if records are being requested by a
law firm. If there is an attorney
involved there is usually some sort of
litigation occurring related to an
accident or injury.
How can hospitals increase injury
claims recoveries?
The key is getting good accurate
information as early as possible. Injury
claims experts have to know what
happened and how the accident
occurred. They need to know what
coverages are available and which are
not, so they can ask the right questions
to find as many coverages as possible.
They also need to make sure that they
are billing in the right order which
involves following federal law and state
regulations.
What do hospitals need to know
about ICD-10?
The primary thing they need to know,
as it related to accident and injury
claims, is that they are non-covered
entities, so they are not required to use
ICD-10 at this time. They can still
require healthcare providers to submit
claims in ICD-9 which creates a little bit
of a hurdle because hospitals are
gearing up to convert to ICD-10 across
the board, so providers are going to
have to down code claims with carriers
who are not ready to accept ICD-10.
This leads to a bifurcated coding
system. Most hospitals have some way
to handle the bifurcated coding system,
but if not prepared for it, they can have
a substantial number of ICD-10 coded
accident claims that are denied because
the carrier is not accepting ICD-10 yet.
Do you have any recommendations
for hospitals that are not equipped
for ICD-10?
If the hospital is not equipped for ICD-
10, they need to outsource coding
immediately. I do not know any that
are not ready for ICD-10, but not all are
ready to bifurcate their coding.
Nonetheless, hospitals have coders that
are very familiar with ICD-9 since they
have been using it for years. They just
need to put in place a system that can
identify these accident claims and have
their coders dual code in ICD-9 or at
least convert ICD-10 claims to ICD-9
when denied, which is an easy task, but
some system needs to be in place to do
that.
It would also be helpful if they talk to all
the major carriers they are dealing with
to see which are accepting ICD-10 and
which are not, so that they can mark
those in their system, and know
beforehand to avoid denial in the first
place.
