Italy Rice Fields Turn into Bird Habitats!
May 28, 2015
Rice fields in Italy's Novara,
Vercelli and Biella provinces are
home for thousands of bird
species. The regions are located in
an area called "baraggia", where
moorland and grassland are mixed
in a sort of “savanna” landscape,
and rice is grown. Now these areas
are part of a natural regional park
extending to about 3,980
hectares.An ornithologist Lucio
Bordignon is conducting a study
over the bird species among these
rice fields. He says thousands of herons, bitterns, stock doves and many others have been found

in the region's rice fields. He will present the findings of his study on June 6 this year in
Busonnengo, a place in "baraggia".
Myanmar Cross Border Rice Exports to
China Decline Due to High Prices, Say
Traders
May 28, 2015
Cross border rice exports from Myanmar to China have remained sluggish since the Water
Festival on April 19 this year due to relatively higher prices, according to local sources. Some
traders told local sources that an increase in local rice prices is also having an impact on the
export prices thereby leading to lower exports. They noted that the price of ordinary rice
increased about 1,500 kyats per 100 kilograms (around $14 per ton) after the Water Festival and

is currently trading at around 18,000 kyats per 100 kilograms (around $164 per ton).Rice prices
at the border are also high, according to local sources. While ordinary rice prices are ruling
between 17,000 kyat - 18,500 kyat per 100 kilograms (around $155 - $169 per ton), qualified
rice prices are ruling between 28,000 kyat - 38,000 kyat per 100 kilograms (around $255 - $347
per ton). In fact they are around 500 kyat (around $4.5 per ton) higher than in other
places. However, traders are expecting the export prices to normalize after the inspecting group
from China will examine the rice slated for export between May 22 and June 1 this year under
the recently signed Memorandum of Understanding (MOU). The group will inspect rice from 19
qualified companies and award export certificated, they said.According to the UN's Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), the domestic prices of most commonly used Emata rice have
been increasing since November 2014. Export prices of Myanmar 5% rice currently stand at
around $425 per ton.
Government of Cambodia to Check
'Unethical' Rice Tampering
May 28, 2015
The government of Cambodia is
planning to increase checks on
'unethical' rice tampering as part of
efforts to ensure Cambodian rice,
slated for export, is not mixed with
rice from neighboring countries,
according to local sources.n a letter
dated May 11, 2015, the Ministry of
Commerce has communicated to all
exporters that it will stop issuing
Certificates of Origin to exporters
found to be using non-Cambodian rice
for export. The government became serious over the rice tampering issue following the European
Union's (EU) increased monitoring of rice imports for clear Certificate of Origins.
Of late the EU has been keen on pausing or banning the rice imports without clear origins. There
are also concerns that the EU may take this opportunity to withdraw its duty-free imports from
Asian Least Developed Countries (LDCs) under the Everything But Arms (EBA) agreement. The
EU Ambassador to Cambodia noted that it is the responsibility of the Cambodian authorities to

ensure of the quality of the commodities exported to the EU under the EBA agreement. "Indeed,
as for any other product exported to the EU under EBA, were the rule of origin not respected, it
may lead to an investigation by the EU,” he was quoted as saying in an email. The Ministry also
urged the President of the Cambodia Rice Federation, millers and exporters to strictly comply
with the agreed code of conduct on rice exports the EU. The letter also stated that the Ministry
would conduct surprise inspections in rice milling and exporting companies to ensure there is no
rice tampering.

Government of Indonesia Will Import Rice
as Last Resort, Says Agriculture Minister
May 28, 2015

The Indonesian Agriculture
Minister reiterated that there were
enough rice and paddy stocks in
the country and would be
sufficient till September this year,
according to local sources.While
accompanying the President
during visits to the rice growing
regions in Manado, North
Sulawes, he told local sources that
demand usually increases ahead of
the festive seasons Ramadhan and
Idul Fitri. But he noted that the
government would import rice as a
last resort if domestics stocks were insufficient. As of now, the government is reviewing the
production and stock situations and is likely to take a decision on imports next month. The
government is also ramping up its rice procurement efforts as harvest season has arrived in most
of the regions and will peak in June. It has fixed the government purchasing price at about Rp
7,260 per kilogram (around $550 per ton). The Minister also noted that prices have moderated in
most of the regions. “There will be no limit on the amount of rice we buy.
We will buy their rice in any volume,” he was quoted as saying.According to the UN’s Food and
Agriculture Organization (FAO), the average rice prices in the country have been increasing
since September 2014 and have reached record levels in March 2015. However, since April,
prices reversed direction due to the government intervention as well as increased supplies from
the 2015 main season rice crop. Currently, prices stand at around 9.875 million Rupiah (around
$751) per ton, down from around 10 million Rupiah (around $770) per ton in April
2015.Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry is in the process of minimizing the effects of a likely
El Nino on the country's rice production levels.
The Agriculture Minister noted that the Ministry has set up a team consisting of agricultural
experts and those experienced in understanding the impacts of El Nino to anticipate the effects of
the event on rice production.USDA estimates Indonesia to produce around 36.3 million tons of
rice, basis milled (around 57.17 million tons, basis paddy), and import around 1.25 million tons
of rice in MY 2014-15 (October - September).

Government of Indonesia Will Import Rice as Last Resort, Says Agriculture Minister May 28, 2015
  • 10. Daily Exclusive ORYZA Rice E-Newsletter 2015 www.ricepluss.com & www.riceplusmagazine.blogspot.com Page 10 The Indonesian Agriculture Minister reiterated that there were enough rice and paddy stocks in the country and would be sufficient till September this year, according to local sources. While accompanying the President during visits to the rice growing regions in Manado, North Sulawes, he told local sources that demand usually increases ahead of the festive seasons Ramadhan and Idul Fitri. But he noted that the government would import rice as a last resort if domestics stocks were insufficient. As of now, the government is reviewing the production and stock situations and is likely to take a decision on imports next month. The government is also ramping up its rice procurement efforts as harvest season has arrived in most of the regions and will peak in June. It has fixed the government purchasing price at about Rp 7,260 per kilogram (around $550 per ton). The Minister also noted that prices have moderated in most of the regions. “There will be no limit on the amount of rice we buy. We will buy their rice in any volume,” he was quoted as saying.According to the UN’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the average rice prices in the country have been increasing since September 2014 and have reached record levels in March 2015. However, since April, prices reversed direction due to the government intervention as well as increased supplies from the 2015 main season rice crop. Currently, prices stand at around 9.875 million Rupiah (around $751) per ton, down from around 10 million Rupiah (around $770) per ton in April 2015.Meanwhile, the Agriculture Ministry is in the process of minimizing the effects of a likely El Nino on the country's rice production levels. The Agriculture Minister noted that the Ministry has set up a team consisting of agricultural experts and those experienced in understanding the impacts of El Nino to anticipate the effects of the event on rice production.USDA estimates Indonesia to produce around 36.3 million tons of rice, basis milled (around 57.17 million tons, basis paddy), and import around 1.25 million tons of rice in MY 2014-15 (October - September).
