Enter The World Of Freediving
Humans have evolved into creatures that can use their intelligence for just about anything.
We are a species that can accomplish things others cannot. Yet, evolution has made us
forego certain abilities. Like being able to breathe underwater, for instance. But this has not
stopped us from attempting to compete with other species in their areas of specialty.
Freediving is the practice of holding one’s breath under water under various depths in order
to accomplish certain aquatic activities. These include snorkeling, freedive photography,
breathhold spear fishing and apnea competitions. Freediving is a mentally and physically
challenging sport as the body is made to function without oxygen, the breath of life. Here,
2. the body undergoes various changes like decreased heart rate, release of oxygen-carrying
red blood cells, shrinking of blood vessels and filling of blood vessels by blood plasma.
In order to be able to freedive, a person has to undergo physical and mental freediving
training. These include techniques that involve breath holding, relaxation, lung training, ear
equalizing and technique training. Physically, you’ll need to be at the top as without
strength, you may as well kiss freediving goodbye. Muscular training, cardiovascular
training, flexibility and yoga training, meditation and visualization are the other side of the
coin.
It is recommended that a person undergoes the above normal training at first and slowly
changes to exercises that are specific to the sport. These include swim training, focusing on
specific stretches, muscular and mental strength and yoga and lung training. Experts also
3. advise against training for very long distances to avoid blackouts and instead advise a series
of short distances at a time.
Do not attempt freediving training without supervision or a friend watching over you. If
you’re not careful, you can blackout during underwater apnea and drown. Research and
speak to people who engage in the sport for first hand tips. Get to know your body and its
limits. If you are serious about freediving, know the risks involved as taking it lightly may
cost you dearly. Go for regular training and know all there is to know about the sport. Once
you’ve got everything down pat, you’re free to enjoy the delights of freediving.
