There are many reasons why I chose to leave the gym where I was a Personal Trainer and
specialize in outdoors coaching.
Among the reasons is the level of difficulty that comes with outdoors training, the challenge to
continuously adapt to the ever changing environment which is a mental challenge as well as
physical, the fresh air and room to breathe. All these are essential elements for my clients' personal
development.
Training outdoors is also less stressful, we don't worry about makeup, clean shoes (or even any
shoes for that matter) or entering the gym all wet because it's raining outside. Less worry.
These are all benefits to be expected. A less expected benefit of training outdoors is: CREATIVITY.
Outdoors you've got to think outside of the box.
I like coaching and training in forests, there is something that draws me there. But whether you go in
a forest, Hyde Park or Green Park you can find your little space to be yourself and with yourself.
Creativity is like a muscle, the more you use it the stronger it gets.
It's easy when you have pictures on the walls, as you usually do in gyms. You look at the picture and
you try to do the same. You also have mirrors so you use your eyes to see your technique, which is
good at the beginning.
However outdoors you have to think, feel and open up all your other senses. Outdoors you truly
come alive.
Outdoors and indoors training are a bit like audio mp3 and TVs. Audios make you use your
imagination, TVs gives you the images so it limits imagination. Same with outdoors and indoors
training.
2. Thus, choose a day next week and, be it rain or snow, leave the gym equipment behind, go to Green
Park and begin using your imagination.
Strengthen your creative muscle through outdoors training and you will get creative in other areas of
your life, personal and professional.
Here are a few ways to get you started:
1. Think about how animals move. Move like them.
2. Think about what babies and toddlers do. How they play. Move and do the things they do.
3. It's all body weight....but, you have to move in ways you have never moved before. If you
practice Yoga do something different, if you are a runner do something different, if you
usually do Tai-Chi do something else now.
4. Think about the parts of your body you usually ignore. We usually think about strengthening
the thighs, the glutes, core, mobilizing hips and stretching the hamstrings. We seldom think
about our fingers, toes, soles of feet, wrists or even the neck.
For your body to be truly strong you must strengthen the small elements as well. Otherwise it's like a
4 story building where the 1st and 4th levels are finished but the 2nd and 3rd only have the metal
rods in place. That is not a strong building.
5. Allow your body to move freely. Believe it or not your body knows how to move already. You
just have to let it do its thing. I know it's difficult, you may just stand there and think "now
what?". I know, I've been there.
As adults we care a lot about what others think when we do things in a different way so we keep
ourselves from doing them.
Training with me, my clients have gone past this. They do by themselves all the different, unusual
movements we do together. And they just love it. Now it's your turn.
6. Watch videos on natural movement or Organic Movement and Fluid Movement from The
Merisoiu Technique, to just get some ideas.
3. There are also a few rules for you:
1. Do things you never do/did in the gym.
2. Avoid using trees, benches or anything that belongs to the public place. It will keep you out
of trouble and it will force you to get creative.
3. Don't use the playground, it's for kids.
4. Whatever you do make sure you don't disturb others so they enjoy Green Park as well.
5. No dumbbells, kettlebells or gym equipment
6. No texting, emailing or checking Facebook. When you train you train, you don't text. Be
mindful of what you are actually doing otherwise you are wasting your time.
Enjoy exploring movement and interacting with nature.
